Job Summary
The DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY at EAST TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY invites applications for a non-tenure track 9-month CLINICAL ASSISTANT PROFESSOR position in Clinical / Health Service Psychology, with specialization in addiction / substance use disorder (SUD) treatment / recovery, beginning as soon as 1 / 05 / 25. ALL areas of clinical / counseling psychology will be considered. Candidates from underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.
The workload for the position will be 50% research and 50% teaching, which may include clinical supervision and / or courses in our graduate curriculum, such as assessment. Other responsibilities include independent and collaborative research / scholarly work and service, and close collaboration and affiliation with the Addiction Science Center. The department expects all successful candidates to establish and maintain independent active research programs involving undergraduate and graduate students, and to pursue extramural funding. Exceptional collaborative research opportunities also exist within the James H. Quillen College of Medicine and the ETSU / Ballad Health STRONG BRAIN Institute. The candidate will also be expected to supervise students working in external community agency placements that are focused on substance use / recovery (e.g., medication-assisted treatment clinic). This supervision is incorporated within the teaching load described below.
This position is one of five new faculty and two clinical fellow hires across four departments (Psychology, Counseling, Human Services, Nursing, and Social Work) focused on addiction and recovery. This position is a one to three-year appointment and may be convertible to tenure-track no later than the end of year three of the appointment. Funding for the position is from the State of Tennessee's Opioid Abatement Council. This position is one of a cohort of faculty and clinical fellows hired across behavioral health professions training programs who will help to grow the SUD workforce and the skill set of the existing healthcare workforce around the region. In addition to support from the Department of Psychology, this position will receive significant support for research from the Addiction Science Center. The Addiction Science Center partners with affected communities in Central Appalachia to advance the science of substance misuse prevention and treatment.
Department Overview
The Department of Psychology at ETSU houses an APA-accredited Clinical Psychology Ph.D. concentration with a special focus on rural mental health and primary care psychology and has been identified as an exemplary program in training students to practice in integrated settings. The department also houses an in-house training clinic and a complementary Ph.D. concentration in Experimental Psychology focusing on translational research. Our Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program consists of students from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds, with nearly 50% of whom are first-generation college students. Most of our graduate students go on to careers in clinical service in rural and medically underserved communities.
