Job Summary
The James H. Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University seeks a licensed mental health counselor to fill part-time hours on evenings and weekends. Services may be in-person or via telehealth. Assists with student success with the goal of promoting behavioral health and aiding in the personal growth of medical students and residents. Responsible to the Director of Academic Support and Counseling Services, the mental health counselor identifies the needs of students and develops appropriate therapy goals and objectives for the implementation of an individual therapy plan. Provides diverse clinical interventions tailored to the unique needs of the individual student, resident, or family member.
This is a temporary position, filled on an annual basis with an opportunity for renewal. There is no guarantee of hours, and all part-time work will be based on patient needs. This position does not include benefits.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to build and maintain a positive rapport with students / clients
- Ability to assess, diagnose, and provide a variety of effective therapeutic interventions for common mental health issues
- Ability to develop reports as to the number of patients seen and various diagnoses and services required while maintaining confidentiality / HIPAA guidelines.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse student population, with an understanding of the potential needs of minority and / or disadvantaged populations.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to function under general supervision, and determine best methods to accomplish assignments.
- Ability to utilize electronic medical record systems and maintain confidential records.
- Must have flexible hours to accommodate the schedules of medical students and residents.
