POSITION SUMMARY:
Collects bio-hazardous waste on a daily basis throughout the hospital and places in appropriate containers. Assures proper precautionary infection control measures are taken. Maintains bio-hazardous manifests; stores labeled waste in accordance with EPA and DEP regulations and infection control policy.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
- A High School Diploma or GED equivalent is preferred, but not required.
EXPERIENCE:
- Previous work experience as a Housekeeper or Environmental Aide II within ECHN, or in another healthcare facility where bio-hazardous waste and special handling and disposal policies were practiced would be considered a plus.
- Four (4) to six (6) weeks of on-the-job training is provided to assure knowledge of and compliance with EPA, DEP and hospital and/or affiliate facility infection control policies and practices.
COMPETENCIES:
- Must be able to understand verbal and written instructions in English, be capable of reading, comprehending and following State and Federal moderately complex bio-hazardous regulations and ECHN policy pertaining to the proper handling, storage, packaging, labeling, logging and disposal of all bio-hazardous materials.
- Must be able to spell and write in English sufficiently enough to maintain mandated bio-hazardous manifests, and be able to speak English at the level necessary to facilitate the safe and efficient performance of all essential duties of the job.
- Must be capable of lifting up to 75 pounds.
- Knowledge of all regulations, policies and practice pertaining to bio-hazardous waste is required before attempting work.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Competently performs any Aide I duties including following the Seven-Step Cleaning Process to ensure a safe and sanitary environment.
- Competently performs any Aide II duties including maintaining clean floors by performing all aspects of care including mopping, stripping, buffing, waxing, carpet cleaning and extraction, often using heavy equipment which may require lifting up to 75 pounds.
- Performs all environmental service related responsibilities servicing patients, residents, visitors and employees while demonstrating customer service skills as taught during employee orientation.
- Performs discharges including stripping patient beds.
- Collects bio-hazardous waste and sharps from all assigned areas on a daily basis.
- Empties bio-hazardous waste into approved containers in accordance with regulating agency and ECHN policy.
- Weighs, labels, packages and stores all hazardous waste in accordance with policy.
- Maintains accurate, legible bio-hazardous manifests.
- Maintains sufficient inventories of supplies needed so as not to interrupt daily collection and disposal routine.
- Notifies supervisor should any discrepancy in inventory occur.
- Cleans and maintains assigned areas following established prescribed methods.
- Monitors/patrols the grounds of the hospital or facility to assure cleanliness and safety.
