Supervised by: High School Principal

Positions Supervised: None

Classification: 10 months

Effective Date: July 1


Position Description:

Carries out the mission of Eastern Mennonite School by helping to shape the academic and spiritual lives of our students. The Physics teacher position provides core content instruction and learning experiences for 1 section of General Physics with laboratory expectations for high school students. Collaborative and relational strengths for working with the science department and students is important. Instructional load is one class per day working with advanced science students. The instructional load is 16.7%. The Physics position could easily be combined with other openings of interest.

Serves as a role model for students a strong personal faith and commitment to following Jesus by:

  • Showing care and compassion for students and colleagues.
  • Sharing faith and knowledge of what it means to follow Jesus as developmentally appropriate.
  • Maintaining integrity in all relationships.

Exhibits professional practices that enhance classroom practice:

  • Shows habits of punctuality.
  • Completes teacher tasks in a regular and timely manner.
  • Presents in word, actions, and appearances professionalism which elicits the respect of students, parents, colleagues and other broader constituencies.
  • Participates on committees and sponsors extra-curricular activities as agreed upon with the administration within the guidelines set by the extra-curricular policy.
  • Periodically seeks written feedback from students in each class, and provides the results to the administration for review and comment.
  • Cultivates positive communication with students and parents.
  • Regularly attends faculty meetings, in-service activities and PTF functions as requested.
  • Shows evidence of an on-going commitment to professional growth and development.
  • Works to develop new methodologies and participates in innovative educational practices, especially those determined by faculty action.
  • Monitors student behaviors, language and attitudes in non-classroom settings on campus in accordance with school policy.
  • Works collaboratively with colleagues to further the effectiveness of instruction.
  • Supports school policies and decisions.

Strives to improve classroom instruction and to facilitate the learning process for students:

  • Develop and/or update a curriculum scope and sequence for each course taught, including content skills and objectives, instructional strategies, assessments, and field trip opportunities.
  • Develops a comprehensive syllabus for each class, including course objectives, projected schedule of activities, assessment procedures and an objective grading system easily understood by students and parents.
  • Prepares unit and daily lesson plans for each class.
  • Applies tested and validated teaching techniques appropriate to the content and the developmental abilities of the students.
  • Teaches content and gifted behaviors as specified by the school.
  • Manages class activities in a manner which requires students to develop a framework for understanding content knowledge and responding to knowledge in an analytical way.
  • Carries out, in a consistent manner, appropriate classroom discipline procedures.
  • Regularly and appropriately integrates faith and scriptures into classroom activities.
  • Builds content area expertise through consistent and ongoing professional development.
  • Keeps parents abreast of student progress in accordance with school policy and in a manner which reflects the teacher’s position as advocate for the student.
  • Integrates and manages appropriate technology into the learning environment.
  • Maintains connections to other professionals through discussion, classroom observation.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in content area required; teacher certification with successful experience is highly preferred
  • Master’s Degree desired
  • Current certification in the state of Virginia; preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with students and adults
  • Proficient with technology
  • High personal standards for professional development
