General Summary
Advise and counsel all assigned students on curriculum requirements, vocational information, scholarship and /or academic achievement problems.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Advise students on courses, class loads, course changes, withdrawals, transfers of credits, eligibility for credit by examination and time extensions.
- Provide general advisory and vocational information to students and assist in the distribution of information.
- Assist in administering advising programs designed for specific students, such as students with special needs, evening students, probationary students, foreign students, etc.
- Assist with in-service training seminars for advisors, faculty interns, graduate assistants and student advising assistants.
- Assist Departmental advisors concerning academic policies and procedures.
- Attend staff meetings and participate on University committees.
- If applicable to area of assignment, adhere to any and all NCAA, Mid-American Conference and Eastern Michigan University policies, rules, regulations, and operational procedures.

- Perform related Departmental duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
One year of experience in a counseling-related environment, is necessary.
Written and interpersonal communication skills, in order to effectively interact with students, are necessary.
Personal computer knowledge is necessary.
Ability to perform physically active work of a light nature including occasional lifting requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force to transport materials and equipment may be necessary depending on area of assignment.
Previous experience providing knowledge of academic areas of assignment may be required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of academic advising and counseling, course work and related degree programs, typically acquired through the completion of a bachelor’s degree is required; a master’s degree is preferred.
Professional counseling licensure is desirable.
Teaching experience is desirable.
