Job Duties
- Attend all required training to enhance skills and meet Agency guidelines and as required by the Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), and other agencies governing the operation of the Agency.
- Build and foster relationships with the youth, young adults, and family & others working with the youth.
- Actively engage as part of the treatment team to meet individual needs, complete all required documentation and paperwork.
- Prepare the individual to fully participate in their own meetings and treatment planning process (including Wraparound, Family Centered Planning meetings (IPOS), IEP meetings, etc.).
- Teach self-advocacy, problem solving and independent living skills.
- Provide support during “rough” or “crisis” times.
- Assist individuals in accessing community resources, support services, and crisis intervention when needed.
- Provide community education about youth culture and perspective. 9. Interrupt bias and promote a stance of acceptance while reducing stigma about mental health.
Qualifications
- Youth Peer Support Specialists must have direct lived experience with mental health challenges as a youth
- Be a Certified Youth Peer Support Specialist
- As required by MDHHS, complete a minimum of 32 continuing education hours of approved training, workshops, and/or conferences during the two-year period prior to renewal of certification.
- Be a young adult, ages 18 through 28, with lived experience with mental health challenges as a youth and who received mental health support as a youth or young adult. Experience receiving services in a variety of systems (such as child welfare, education, the justice system, vocation, housing, etc.) as a youth or young adult is preferred
- Primary diagnosis of a mental health condition
- Have a strong personal knowledge of what it is like to have first-hand lived experience with a mental health condition that has caused a substantial life disruption
- Has been a recipient of mental health treatment and/or services for at least one year, with a substantial life disruption due to their mental health condition
- Have personal experience in navigating complex mental health treatment services
