What are the responsibilities and job description for the Court Recorder position at Eaton County?
Under the direction of the Circuit Court Judge and under the supervision of the Court Administrator, serves as an official Court Recorder responsible for the electronic recording of court proceedings, and as an administrative support person for the Circuit Court. Prepares written transcripts of proceedings as workload allows and maintains records related to the recorded proceeding.
Starting pay is dependent on an applicant's relevant experience.

This position could close at any time.**- Prepares courtroom for proceedings, includes checking the operation of recording equipment, monitoring placement of microphones, ensuring sufficient supplies, and readiness of case files.
- Uses electronic video and audio recording equipment to record circuit court proceedings including arraignments, pleas, sentences, civil cases, jury and non-jury trials, and other matters. Monitors the recording ensuring an accurate and appropriate record.
- While recording proceedings, prepares a concise log of recorded activity to maintain a permanent court record, including names of parties, nature of proceeding, and related case information. Logging activity must identify the speaker, note the point in a proceeding when exhibits are marked, witnesses are called, and other actions occur in order to assist in transcript preparation.
- Marks and maintains record of exhibits and provides other assistance to the Judge in the courtroom. Maintains transcript files, tapes, and courtroom notes as required by court rules and as outlined in the state manual for court reporters and recorders. Responsible for labeling recorded proceedings for future identification, labeling notes and any preparation of recordings for off-site storage.
- Responsible for identifying and locating recorded court proceedings, being able to separate excerpts of testimony for jury trials, or for other purposes as directed.
- Prepares a written transcript of court proceedings when requested, which may include researching legal, medical and technical terminology for accuracy of the transcription. May be responsible for the oversight of individuals hired to prepare transcripts and proofread their work.
- Prepares appeal transcripts, certificates of ordering transcripts, notices of filing when a transcript is complete, pursuant to the Michigan Court Rule time deadlines.
- Organizes and maintains a filings system for transcripts, court recorder notes, and other records.
- Responsible for adhering to the court’s record retention policy for court recorded proceedings, written court notes, and other records related to court proceedings. Identifies and establishes retention schedules for the accurate and regular purging of records as permitted.
- Performs various other support tasks as requested by the Judges, court administrator or judicial staff.
- May serve as a court recorder in the Probate and District Courts based on court need.
- May prepare appeal paperwork as requested.
- May serve as back up to the judicial assistants as needed.
Experience: Must possess or have the ability to successfully complete certification requirements for Certified Electronic Operator (CEO) as designated by the Michigan Supreme Court. Must possess or have the ability to successfully complete certification requirements for Certified Electronic Recorder (CER) as designated by the Michigan Supreme Court.
Other Requirements: Must be an accurate typist with a high typing proficiency. Successful completion of a criminal and employment background investigation required.
FLSA Status: Non-exempt.
