What are the responsibilities and job description for the Casual Med Surg Patient Care Tech-Eaton Rapids position at Eaton Rapids Medical Center?
Assumes responsibility for meeting patient and family needs of a non-clinical nature, provides patient care support, and maintenance of nursing unit. Collects, records, and maintains various patient data (vital signs, intake &output, pulse oximetry, etc.) Assumes responsibility for supply and equipment orders, storage and distribution of supplies and equipment. Responsible for unit clerical duties including but not limited to, assembling charts, entering orders, etc. Recognizes age specific differences in care and implements appropriate measures. Works cooperatively with staff and physician to achieve the highest quality of care for patients. Reports patient needs and changes in the patient condition to the appropriate nurse. Provides safe quality care with all departments using skills within scope of practice.
- Welcomes patients/families upon admission; assists with orientation of patient/family to call light, TV, phone, bed function, etc. Provides information on hospital policies,(i.e., no smoking facility, safety protocols including fall risk, Patient and Visitor Rights, etc.) as appropriate. Obtains admission vital signs, weights, and other pertinent information. Applies cardiac monitoring as ordered.
- Responds to call lights in a timely manner. Makes frequent, purposeful patient rounds to ensure patient care and safety needs are met; call lights within reach, bed alarms activated, turning and toileting, etc. Provides and assists patients with activities of daily living; meal assist, bathing, toileting, turning, etc. Knowledge of universal precautions and isolation protocol. Assists with transport of patients to other departments and on discharge.
- Assists RN with cleansing wounds, changing dressings, suture removal, urinary catheterization. Additional duties as assigned, if trained and demonstrated competency. Immediately reports concerns or change in patient condition to RN. Knowledge of universal precautions and isolation protocols. Collects, packages and delivers specimens to Lab.
- Orders supplies and equipment in Meditech; monitors and maintains par levels. Completes monthly departmental checklist, calibrates and check equipment daily and/or prior to use. Monitors refrigerator/freezer thermometers, telemetry logs and charts.
- Follows instructions of direct report including the establishment of work priorities, demonstrates skills in keeping work organized incorporating a productive and cost effective environment.
- Demonstrates competency in order entry; accurately enters patient orders in Meditech. Accurately documents vital signs, daily weights, intake and output and other pertinent data in Meditech.
- Demonstrates excellent customer service skills in dealing with physicians, staff, peers, patients and public/customers. Answers and transfers telephone calls in a courteous professional manner. Communicates concerns to appropriate personnel in a timely manner, including Manager.
- Ensures that a quiet, business-like atmosphere is maintained on the unit. Makes environmental rounds and ensures cleanliness of patient rooms, utility rooms, refrigerators, nurse's station and break room. Completes Non-Conforming Product/Equipment procedure, submits SysAid and notifies Maintenance. Communicates concerns to appropriate personnel. Maintains the Medical Surgical Unit in a state of readiness for insurance, state/federal and DNV surveys/inspections.
- Arranges for consultations and assists consulting physician with correct order entry procedure and forms completion. Schedules outpatient procedures and tests. Prepares patient transfer forms and assists with transfer arrangements.
- Actively seeks and participates in healthcare related educational opportunities. Completes CareLearning, Lippincott and clinical competencies as assigned. Contributes to generating Quality Improvement goals and achieving them. Maintains record of in-service, staff meeting, continuing education, and competency completion.
- Demonstrates competency in using Meditech, public drives, Microsoft Office, and email/calendar applications. Maintains current consulting physician/agency telephone numbers and resource information.
BLS required upon hire and maintained throughout employment. High school graduate or equivalent. Graduate of accredited CNA or PCT program preferred. 1-2 years experience with direct patient care required. Basic computer skills required. Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook preferred.
