Are you passionate about serving the needs of youth and caregivers? Are you also creative, fun, energetic, innovative, and adaptable? If so, join us at the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

Our youth services team serves children birth through age 18, and their caregivers. As a Coordinator in youth services, you’ll provide top notch customer service through reference and reader's advisory, provide outreach services at schools and community events, plan and conduct children’s programs, create displays and publicity materials, and so much more.

We’re looking for a candidate that has a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in training and work experience. Applicants should have experience working with children and/or teens and their families, and are knowledgeable about children’s and young adult literature.

This is a part-time position, 28 hours per week. The starting rate is $25.00 per hour. The proposed schedule includes a variety of daytime hours and rotating evening and weekend shifts.

Benefits for the 28 hours per week position include paid vacation and sick leave and participation in the Wisconsin Retirement System.

TITLE: Youth Services Coordinator

DIVISION: Youth Services

REPORTS TO: Youth Services Manager

DATE: February 2025

STATUS: Non-exempt


SUMMARY

Under general supervision, this position is responsible for assisting the Youth Services (YS) Manager in providing a full range of programs and services to children, teenagers, and adults.  


EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/TESTING REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university or equivalent in training and proven work experience.  
  • Course work in children's and teen literature or equivalent.


QUALIFICATIONS

The requirements listed below are representative of the qualities, knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform the essential functions of the job.  

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of library services to youth.         
  • Ability to work enthusiastically and effectively with children, teens, and adults in the library and community.
  • Ability to creatively plan, promote, and present library programs. 
  • Ability to meet deadlines and willingness to work in an environment with quickly changing tasks and priorities.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks associated with the day-to-day services of the library.
  • Initiative to work independently with minimal direction and to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational skills; ability to work accurately with attention to detail.
  • Ability to efficiently operate a variety of office equipment and willingness to learn and implement new technology.
  • Proficient in MS Office, ability to navigate and search online resources, ability to learn graphics software.
  • Possession of a valid Wisconsin driver’s license and the ability to maintain a good driving record by following traffic laws and regulations to ensure the safe operation of library vehicles. 
  • Availability and flexibility to work day, evening, and weekend shifts, as needed.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following are the regular duties for this position.  These duties are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.   Other duties may be required and assigned.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Provides reader's advisory services. Answers reference and information questions regarding children's and teen materials and services.  Assists customers in locating, selecting, and using materials and equipment, navigating electronic services, and booking study rooms.
  • Provides outreach for children and families through visits to schools, early literacy centers and community events.
  • Plans and conducts library programs, tours and, class visits.
  • Plans and creates displays and signs. 
  • Provides and directs work assignments to YS Assistants.
  • Contributes to the updates of YS procedures and processes, prepares bibliographies, writes correspondence.
  • Maintains prompt, predictable, and regular physical attendance.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and orderly public space within the library building and grounds.
  • Contributes to a positive, team-oriented work environment by being helpful, respectful, and approachable to both staff and the public.
  • Responsible for the YS division in the absence of the YS Manager and Librarians.


NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following are nonessential functions for this position.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Keeps up-to-date of new materials and developments in the field through continuing education activities.
  • Provides outreach to the public through attending community events.
  • Serves on committees.
  • Assists in administrative duties as needed.


WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work varies between sedentary (sitting) with frequent walking and standing in a general office setting with a minimal presence of hazard.  Frequent bending, squatting, and reaching motions.   Occasional climbing.  Occasional lifting, carrying, and/or moving materials of 21-50 pounds.  


LANGUAGE SKILLS

Must be able to read, write, give, follow, and comprehend verbal and written instructions.  Must have effective oral, written, and graphic communication skills to communicate productively with staff and the public.
