POSITION SUMMARY
The Patrol Deputy performs general duty police work for the apprehension of criminals, prevention of crimes, protection of life and property, and general enforcement of all laws and ordinances. This position is responsible for routine patrol, crash investigations, crowd control, and preliminary investigations of all complaints.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Transfers knowledge of laws and regulations to protect Eau Claire County citizens; enforces all laws and regulations for the discovery and prevention of crimes; imposes county and park ordinances; enforces all state and motor vehicle laws for designated areas of the county,
- Utilizes effective investigative practices to conduct preliminary investigations; gathers evidence, obtains witness statements, makes arrests, and escorts prisoners from the scenes of crimes; practices constructive interpersonal skills to obtain maximum cooperation with minimum coercion; maintains records of activities and prepares reports.
- Responds to complaints, crashes, disturbances, and requests for services in Eau Claire County; assists local fire departments as needed; determines best course of action quickly; remains calm and performs effectively under stressful conditions.
- Creates dispositions of all complaints with diligence; directs people to the proper organizations to manage the complaints as needed; prepares evidence for issuance of complaints; serves criminal process including warrants and subpoenas; detains anyone wanted through the serving of warrants; practices constructive interpersonal skills to obtain maximum cooperation with minimum coercion.
- Provides effective and credible testimony in a court of law; thoroughly reviews case facts in preparation of testimony.
- Proficiently utilizes police related equipment as warranted, such as cameras, weapons, radios, driving of emergency vehicles, tear gas and gas mask, and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
- Acts in a relief capacity, working in other areas of the department as assigned.
- Carries out any lawful order or duty as prescribed by the Sheriff or Sergeant.
- Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
TRAINING AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 60 college credits in criminal justice, business or public administration, corrections, law enforcement, criminology, social/behavior sciences, or a related field.
- Citizen of the United States.
- Eighteen (18) years of age or older upon appointment.
- Appointment will be conditional upon successful completion of a criminal background check resulting in no felony convictions in any jurisdiction unless the judgment or conviction has been reversed, or a complete pardon has been granted.
- Fingerprinting will be kept on file for identification purposes.
- Position will be subject to pre-hire, random, and post-accident drug and alcohol testing during the course of employment.
- Position will require a pre-employment physical.
- Position will require a psychological examination.
- Possess and maintain a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
- Possess and maintain valid Wisconsin Law Enforcement Certification.
- As a condition of continued employment, attend 24 hours of annual ongoing training in law enforcement/corrections.
DESIRED TRAINING AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS
- Associate degree in criminal justice, business or public administration, corrections, law enforcement, criminology, social/behavior sciences, or a related field.
- Two (2) years of full-time law enforcement experience, relevant military experience, or equivalent criminal justice experience.
- Experience or training in personal computer use with Microsoft Office software.
- Ability to fluently speak Spanish, sign language, or other foreign language as a secondary language.
- CPR/First Aid Certification.
- Paid or volunteer experience with a professional organization that provides training in a relevant service-related field.
