POSITION SUMMARY

The Juvenile Detention Center Worker supervises juveniles held in secure detention and assists in providing services for their care. This position maintains a secure and safe environment and enforces the policies and procedures established for the Northwest Regional Juvenile Detention Center in accordance with laws and regulations governing secure detention of juveniles.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Manages and interacts with juveniles, individually or in groups, to provide a positive rehabilitative influence; demonstrates leadership by being a positive role model for youth and treating all persons with dignity and respect.
  • Applies attentive and careful observation to individual and group behaviors daily; screens and evaluates juveniles for signs of abuse, behavioral problems, alcohol and drug abuse or withdrawal, security risk and psychological needs; identifies and takes appropriate action with all juveniles that appear mentally or physically ill; enforces regulations and behavior management policies related to the security and operation of the facility; documents observations in compliance with laws and regulations.
  • Admits and discharges juveniles according to established procedures; records all necessary information;maintains required documentation.
  • Evaluates potentially dangerous situations and makes critical and sound judgments and decisions on how to diffuse; responds promptly and effectively in emergency situations; uses appropriate techniques to calm disruptive juvenile residents.
  • Provides for health, safety, and recreation needs of juveniles in detention; complies with all procedures and schedules for meals, laundry, cleaning, maintenance, and inspections; distributes meals, clothing, and linens; receipts, verifies, and dispenses resident medications as instructed; provides and supervises juveniles' access to educational and recreational activities; provides transportation to juveniles for court and off-site appointments and activities.
  • Demonstrates effective case management services to juveniles in the 180 Program; conducts home, school, and work site visits; coordinates juvenile’s daily program activities.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned.

TRAINING AND PROFESSIONAL EXEPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of work experience providing care, supervision, or custody of children within juvenile justice, group home, shelter care, or foster care environments.
OR
  • Two (2) years of work experience within the juvenile justice system.
OR
  • Post high school education with courses in social work, psychology, sociology, or related field.
    • Eighteen (18) years of age or older upon appointment.
    • Appointment will be conditional upon successful completion of a caregiver check and criminal background check resulting in no felony convictions in any jurisdiction unless the judgment or conviction has been reversed, or a complete pardon has been granted.
    • Position will be subject to pre-hire, random, and post-accident drug and alcohol testing during the course of employment.
    • Position will require a pre-employment physical and audiogram.
    • Position will require fingerprinting and with a search of local, state, and national fingerprint records.
    • Must have valid driver’s license, an acceptable driving record, and access to private transportation for work-related duties.
    • Must possess and maintain personal automobile insurance in the amount of $100,000/$300,000.
    • Completed the Basic Juvenile Detention Officer Training or ability to complete training within twelve (12) months of hire as a condition of continued employment.
    • As a condition of continued employment, will be required to complete 24 hours of annual recertification training.

DESIRED TRAINING AND PROFESSIONAL EXERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two (2) years of post-secondary education in a related field.
  • Ability to fluently speak Spanish, sign language, or other foreign language as a secondary language.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification.
  • Paid or volunteer experience with a professional organization that provides training in a relevant service-related field.

Salary : $100,000 - $300,000
