POSITION SUMMARY
The Legal Analyst performs legal administrative work for prosecuting attorneys and prepares legal documents for the District Attorney’s office. This position provides legal administrative services, relieves prosecuting attorneys of administrative details, and makes decisions in accordance with department policies and statutory regulations.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Applies legal office practice techniques and terminology to create, draft, and prepare legal documents, correspondence, and other documents from abbreviated notes, oral instruction, tapes, briefs, drafts, or other materials; composes and prepares correspondence to answer inquiries and obtain information required to manage case issues; performs case monitoring and informs attorneys of files requiring further action.
- Reviews files in preparation for daily initial court hearings to ensure that legal documents are factually accurate, meet notification requirements, and are in conformance with legal formatting standards.
- Attends court hearings, and/or reviews files after hearings to evaluate and determine next steps; prepares resulting or related documents as applicable.
- Prepares and provides discovery materials to defense attorneys/defendants; reviews reports, audio-visual materials, witness statements, search warrants, medical reports, and other materials to determine which information to release and redact in accordance with established law, policies, and procedures; generates and accurately records billing invoices for discovery materials provided.
- Prepares and reviews transcripts of recorded interviews and summarizes relevant information to assist prosecutors with trial preparation.
- Performs basic legal research, reviewing specified laws and cases; prepares findings and recommendations in appropriate formats.
- Adheres to strict confidential record-keeping and retention standards; establishes and maintains records and files.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with internal and external partners; coordinates with law enforcement and correctional institution agencies to ensure defendants appear for court appearances; receives and/or responds to complaints, concerns, and inquiries of both routine and confidential natures; assists other agencies in understanding legal system processes and rulings.
- Performs general office tasks to support the department operations including, but not limited to office reception, answering telephones, filing, photocopying, and case management duties.
- Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
TRAINING AND PROFESSIONAL EXEPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS
- Associate degree in paralegal studies, legal studies, business administration, human services, or related field OR
- High school diploma or equivalent, plus two (2) years of experience in criminal justice or law enforcement office setting.
- Three (3) years of experience performing progressively responsible administrative support duties.
- Appointment will be conditional upon successful completion of a fingerprint-based criminal background check.
DESIRED TRAINING AND PROFESSIONAL EXERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in legal studies, business administration, human services, or related field.
- Knowledge of criminal procedure, legal terminology, and Wisconsin Criminal Code.
- Paralegal degree or significant coursework in related legal field.
