JOB DESCRIPTION
Title : FLEET Mechanic
FLSA Status : Non-Exempt
GENERAL PURPOSE : We operate a fleet of diesel and gas-powered motor coach buses, mini-buses, transit buses, ADA Buses, vans, and limousines.
Fleet Mechanic performs general maintenance and repairs to all fleet vehicles. Fleet operation is performed in the WCL fleet maintenance garage; technical, general repairs and maintenance work is conducted on all fleet vehicles with focus on efficiency, safety, in order to pass emissions, and under DOT Regulations. Mechanic knowledge is critical as tasks are completed but not limited to; inspects, maintains, repairs, and overhauls bus heating and cooling, oil change, tire replacement, general operational repairs using a variety of tools, equipment and diagnostic software.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Follows preventative maintenance program to assure cost effective maintenance and a scheduled maintenance program to provide maintenance by manufacturers specifications.
Updates parts used in maintenance and repairs for each vehicle, maintenance equipment, fuel, repair parts, supplies, etc. Performs and maintains mechanic requirements for certification needed for continuing technical skills related to repair of all fleet equipment.
Practices safety practices and procedures and follows all reasonable company policies related to position. Replaces parts; repairs parts; repairs electrical systems; diagnoses vehicles for minor body and fender work; performs tune ups and engine overhauls; troubleshoots problems when needed.
Documents reports on vehicles and equipment repaired. Keeps maintenance and repair records; performs preventive maintenance on all departmental vehicles; orders repair parts.
Assists and checks repair work performed in shop for completeness. This includes physical inspections and road tests before vehicle is turned back to user departments. Performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience : Graduation from High School plus course work in auto and equipment mechanics at a trade school. Experience mechanic must meet DOT standard qualifications.
TOOLS & EQUIPMENT USED
Laptop computer, including word processing, database software; motor vehicle; phone; fax and copy machine; Samsara, Inventory Program, ADP software.
Motorized vehicles for mechanical testing purposes; power and hand tools and equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work; mechanic's tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools and other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles; electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment; personal computer, calculator, phone, mobile or portable radio.

Special Requirements
- Must possess a valid Illinois state Driver's License.
- Must maintain certifications throughout employment.
- Must have own tools (some larger tools are provided)
- Wheelchair lift, Diagnostics experience is helpful.
- ASE certifications
- CDL class B (Certification available during employment)
- Motor-coach or Transit bus experience a plus
- May be on alternating or rotating as 24 / 7 on call for certain shifts to assist with rescue.
- Air conditioning and heat (HVAC) experience (608 / 609 cert) beneficial
- Brake and suspension experience (ASE A4 / A5 preferred)
- Drivability and emissions experience (gasoline and diesel)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Required tasks include preventive maintenance inspections, emergency and road failure repairs, and general maintenance on vehicles.
Knowledge of an automated Fleet Management Information System, Samsara, Outlook.
Considerable knowledge of safety practices and techniques in mechanics; diesel and gas engine mechanics; vehicle make-up; and the parts and supplies required. Understanding of diesel engines, tires, air brake systems, electrical systems, and be able to perform necessary preventative maintenance and repair in all aspects.
Ability to assist plan, organize and direct the work of skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled employees engaged in repair and maintenance of vehicles. Must document all work completed and parts used.
Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose and repair equipment with accuracy and speed; ability to create effective working relationships with co-workers.
Inspects, maintains, and repairs, bus heating, cooling, using a variety of tools, equipment and diagnostic software. Inspects and tests systems for leaks, worn or defective parts, and other malfunctions. Adjusts valves, gauges, and other controls. Analyzes operating efficiency and recommends improvements.
Ability to function and perform effectively independently or with a team. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing. Performs related duties as required. Ability to follow written and oral instructions. Read and interpret technical documents related to bus air conditioning.
