Survey Instrument Person - Field Technician

Position Description: The Instrument Person works closely with the Party Chief and other members of the crew to complete assignments in a safe and efficient manner. They are proficient in the use and operation of a variety of equipment and data collectors or collection systems. Extensive knowledge of all common surveying instruments and the ability to assist with the training and development of lesser experienced members of the team. Responsibilities include a combination of the following, but are not limited to:

Field Work: Performs, directly or indirectly (i.e. supervising others), all necessary field data collection and assigned safety related activities. Ability to use the most appropriate survey instrument to perform the requested job, including total stations, GPS receivers, levels, LiDAR sensors, etc. to achieve the required field information. Assists the Survey Party Chief, as needed, with field activity logs and results, safety forms and permits.

Training and Operations Support: Provides continuous mentoring, training and assistance to less experienced staff. Assist the Party Chief with appropriate maintenance of assigned equipment, tools and cleanliness, organization and stocking of warehouse spaces. Promotes a sound safety culture based on understanding risks and hazards and taking appropriate action, including assisting the Party Chief with daily, weekly and monthly safety meetings and reporting.

Qualifications and Requirements:

- Thorough understanding of all common surveying and mapping instruments and technology.

- Position requires great flexibility, with the possibility of out-of-town travel as needed by specific projects.

- Ability to perform physical work and lift and carry heavy equipment when required

- Proficient with total stations, digital leveling and electronic data collection.

- FDOT experience and knowledge of their field collection procedures is highly preferred

- High school diploma or equivalent

- 3 years of field experience with a minimum of 1 year as an Instrument Person

- Valid Florida driver’s license and clean driving record

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $17.00 - $22.00 per hour
