What are the responsibilities and job description for the Heat Treat - 3rd Shift position at Eck Industries Inc?
PRIMARY PURPOSE
The primary purpose of a heat treat operator is to prepare castings for heat treatment by looking at required specifications outlined in the work instructions that address the aging and straightening process of the casting. They are responsible for setting up, operating, and tending to heat treat equipment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Straightening Operation:
- Carry the casting from the material load, and place into a fixture, or directly onto the steel bench.
- Use a leather mallet or hand hammer to strike the casting with as much force and number of blows necessary to straighten the casting within acceptable tolerances, as is determined by its fit within the fixture or other gauging. (For large, heavy castings with thick walls these are straightened by use of a sledge hammer.)
- Once a casting is finished, unload from the fixture or bench top, and set aside to the finished load with dividers required by work instructions between layer.
Heat Treat Operation:
- Unload casting and remove divider from casting load.
- Load and position the castings onto heat treat rack or in heat treat basket as outlined in work instructions.
- Place an expanded metal divider between layers.
- Verify correct test bars are placed in each heat treat load.
- Load full racks/baskets into the heat treat oven and quench tanks with forklift and/or overhead hoist.
- Verify times per part specific work instructions.
- Verify oven temperatures for solution.
- Verify oven temperatures for aging.
- After completion of the heat treatment and aging cycles- unload the castings heat treat rack or basket and set aside to the finished load with dividers between layers.
Both Operations may be required to:
- Sign off on all required paperwork including: Shop cards, Heat treat cards, Certificates of Compliance, Oven Charts.
- Study work instructions to determine product specifications, tool requirements, and operational sequences.
- Complete daily inspections on tools and equipment, filling out forms when required to do so.
- Maintain housekeeping in the work area at the end of each shift.
- Maintain area per established 6S standards.
- Perform all other duties as assigned by supervisory or leadman personnel.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
- At least one year of experience in a manufacturing setting is preferred.

- 120 hours on the job training with an experienced Heat Treat Operator.
- Complete heat treat operator training course.
