Eckerd College is currently seeking candidates for the position of Marine Superintendent to join our academics team at our waterfront property along the Boca Ciega Bay in St. Petersburg, Florida, in our relationship-focused community.

In this position, you will support the Natural Sciences Collegium by overseeing the maintenance and operation of marine vessels, seawater systems, and laboratory facilities. This role is responsible for managing marine-related equipment, supervising student workers, coordinating safety and hazardous waste protocols, and ensuring the smooth operation of outdoor and indoor marine science facilities. The Marine Superintendent plays a key role in supporting faculty and students in the use of marine research tools and upholding a safe, well-maintained academic environment.

The incumbent must possess advanced knowledge of boat and marine engine maintenance as well as knowledge of marine and life support systems and aquaria upkeep and maintenance. Excellent skills in communication, organization, and time management are helpful for success in the role. The incumbent must also have knowledge of or a willingness to learn about basic laboratory safety and basic Federal regulations involving workplace safety and handling of hazardous waste.

The position requires the incumbent to frequently move around campus, operate motor vehicles including boats and golf carts, move and transport items weighing up to 50 pounds, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and advanced maintenance and repair of boats and other marine equipment.
  • Purchase and maintain inventories of chemicals, gases, glassware, minor instrumentation, and other marine-related supplies as needed.
  • Schedule and supervise student work scholars and assistants in tasks that include preparation and set-up for lab courses, maintaining stockroom, and general cleaning.
  • Coordinate with Facilities Management for repairs and renovations of the marine science labs, including outdoor classrooms and labs. Inspect, on a continuous basis, for any problems related to building appearance and function; maintain a liaison with appropriate Eckerd College officers, staff, and committees in the areas of safety, waste disposal, and physical plant maintenance.
  • Maintenance of the seawater system and aquaria within GMSL.
  • Manage the GMSL outdoor classrooms and labs.
  • Instruct faculty and students in the use and safe operation of boats.
  • Serve as Hazardous Waste Coordinator for marine science and implement the NAS Hazardous Waste Management Plan (i.e., hazardous waste collection and disposal).
  • Help maintain cleanliness in laboratories, stockroom, docks, and boats.
  • Instruct faculty and students in the use of selected laboratory instruments and marine research equipment.
  • Assist in the oversight of laboratory and boat safety, including developing and revising Safe Operating Procedures (SOP’s) related to marine-oriented activities.
  • Assist in the development, and oversee, emergency response protocols related to hurricanes and hazardous material spills (HazMat) within GMSL.
  • Assist other NAS faculty and staff in the presentation of the educational program.
  • Oversee the operation of vessels and related equipment for Eckerd research projects.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent required; plus 2-3 years of related experience
