DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS : The work involves guarding County buildings and property, maintaining order, coordinating and scheduling lower-level staff with tasks / assignments and giving directions to visitors. Work is performed in accordance with established policy and procedure and requires the use of tact and discretion with information obtained while monitoring County buildings. The incumbent must exercise sound judgment in providing for the safety of County employees and property. Work is performed under the general supervision of a higher-ranking department employee. Direct supervision may be exercised over a small number of security personnel. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES :
- Supervises the control of access to County buildings and property;
- Maintains order and, if necessary, removes disorderly persons from County facilities;
- Prevents trespass, loitering, and theft and property damage;
- Protects employees and public against physical harm caused by others;
- Assists visitors and clients by directing them to appropriate locations or providing non-technical information;
- Inspects packages and parcels carried into or out of buildings;
- Summons proper authorities to apprehend or arrest visitors suspected of committing crimes;
- Supervises and schedules Watch Attendants and Building Guards;
- Controls traffic and parking;
- Prepares and maintains records and reports;
- Utilizes state-of-the-art security equipment to monitor County buildings and property and dispatch as required;
Attends required meetings to maintain security for County buildings.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS : Working knowledge of the practices and procedures used to ensure the maintenance of order and security in public buildings; working knowledge of fire safety practices used in public buildings; working knowledge of procedures used in the emergency evacuation of buildings; working knowledge of legal regulations governing conduct in public buildings; working knowledge of state-of-the-art security equipment; working knowledge of scheduling for 24 hour security coverage; skill in the use of first aid; skill in the use of fire extinguishers and other related fire-fighting equipment; ability to be firm with visitors, employees, and clients; ability to be tactful and courteous; ability to spend long periods of time standing or walking; ability to supervise the work of others; ability to prepare clear, concise reports; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : Candidates must have graduated from a senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and in addition possess one of the following :
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :
A criminal background investigation will be conducted on all applicants prior to hire; and
Registration as a Security Guard by the State of New York, Department of State, Division of Licensing Services at the time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment; and
Possession and maintenance of a valid New York State Driver's License when duties of the position necessitate.
NOTE : Verifiable part-time and / or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
