- POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Performs, supervises and coordinates laboratory tests to determine chemical and physical characteristics of materials for quality production and environmental control.
2. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- After completion of successful training period, should have the ability to perform all routine analysis and results reporting by himself or herself with little or no direct supervisor from another Lab Tech II, III or Lab Leadperson or Lab Manager.
- Sets-up, adjusts, and operates laboratory equipment and instruments such as: Arc-Spark Emission Spectrometer, Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometer, Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Analyzer, Induction Furnace, pH meter, analytical balance and other equipment.
- Troubleshoots minor instrument and equipment errors.
- Prepares chemical solutions according to standard formulas using proper techniques in measuring volumes of liquids and weights of solids and liquids.
- Prepares and makes samples for testing.
- Troubleshoots minor in-process production problems.
- Tests materials qualitatively and quantitatively such as in-process material, slag, dross, raw materials, liquid effluents, and off-gases using spectrographic or chromatographic equipment for elements or substances, and records the test results.
- Tests production samples of in-process and finished product to verify conformity to specifications/targets and records the results of testing.
- Records results of finished product testing into corporate SAP computer system.
- Records test results on standardized forms and prepares test reports using MS Excel.
- Issues instructions for in-process treatments to adjust chemical composition.
- Tests environmental samples to aid in the determination of the disposition of wastes/effluents.
- Understands shipping requirements and notifies Laboratory Supervisor when deficiencies are recognized.
- Complies with all environmental, health, safety, quality systems and housekeeping programs.
- Conducts himself or herself in a professional manner.
- Performs other duties, as assigned or authorized by laboratory management
- Cleans and maintains laboratory equipment.
- Follows written standard work instruction and standard operating procedures.
- Performs environmental sample analysis such as TCLP and, test water samples for trace metals and pH to aid in the determination of the disposition of wastes/effluents.
- Establishes formulation required to meet specifications of materials in process, manufactured products and water and provides instructions of the formulation.
- Assists in covering additional shifts at critical times
- **new hires start at 8 h floating position, consideration given to existing techs for available 12h positions
3. PRE-HIRE REQUIREMENTS:
- Basic computer skills, including Microsoft office suite
- 1– 2 years equivalent experience in a Laboratory
- Completion of college basic chemistry and college algebra courses, or equivalent experience
- Excellent interpersonal communications skills; written and verbal.
- Meet proficiency criteria.
- ( 12) credit hours of college chemistry courses, or equivalent experience
- ( 6) credit hours of college math courses, or equivalent experience.
