Position Summary
Ecology Auto Parts Inc. are looking for several Scrap Metal Transfer Drivers to operate a variety of heavy-duty commercial vehicles (Class A) to transport various materials related to the waste, recycling and demolition industries to/from various locations.
Scrap Drivers are responsible for the pick-up of scrap metals and recyclables from large, high volume construction customers, as well as from residential and other commercial customers, and delivery to mills and other scrap processors in a timely manner while operating various tandem or tri-axle vehicles equipped with roll-off hoists.
Responsibilities & Qualifications/Knowledge/Critical Skills
- Transport materials to various destinations, placing special focus on safety, traffic rules and regulations
- Accurately filling out paperwork, including: daily trip reports, vehicle condition reports and customer work order tickets
- Operates vehicle in accordance with Ecology Auto Parts, Inc safety and Life Critical Rules, OSHA (Occupational and Safety Health Act) and DOT (Department of Transportation) requirements as well as all local, state and federal laws.
- Performs pre- and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicle and documents checks utilizing the standard DVIR (Driver Vehicle Inspection Report)
- Immediately reports all unsafe situations or service-related issues to Operations Manager or Dispatch
- Attends and participates in all scheduled training programs, briefings, and meetings as required by Ecology Auto Parts, Inc. or directed by the Operations Manager.
- Works closely with Operations Manager to improve route efficiencies and identify best practices.
- Notifies Operations Manager and Safety Manager of any incidents, accidents, injures, or property damage.
- Notifies Operations Manager or Dispatch of service interruptions, including blocked containers, closed lots, streets, alleyways or potential safety hazards.
- Communicates customer requests to Dispatch or Operations Manager
- Other duties as assigned
- Class A driver license
- Ability to read and understand a map/GPS
- Ability to perform physical requirements of the job
- Ability to drive truck with a manual and automatic transmissions
- Ability to work in all weather conditions
- Previous CDL truck driving experience preferred
- Waste industry experience, a plus
- Perform pre- and post- trip maintenance checks. Perform operator services, and record on VIR (Vehicle Inspection Report) status of items checked and accomplished, as well as items requiring higher echelon maintenance.
- Maintain the clean, safe operating condition of fleet vehicles to DOT regulations and standards.
- Safely operate fleet vehicles within the laws defined by the state of CA or states in which operating.
- Safely securing and caring for material on truck to allow for minimal damage.
- Maintenance of customer relations in the field, on job sites, at mills/processors, and within the team structure of the company, acting in the best interest of the company at all times.
- Know and be familiar with job site safety rules, as well as abide by them. (hard hats, safety glasses, speed limits, etc.)
- Perform job in an overtime environment, staying within DOT regulations, as seasonal workloads vary and require extra commitment.
- Work safe. Work smart. Conduct self professionally and courteously at all times.
- Communicate effectively with Dispatch and Supervisory personnel via land-line, cell phone or radio.
- Process and Manage required paperwork accurately, completely and neatly recording times, fuel, oils, mileages and weights. Driver’s Daily Logs as required.
- Service 3-6 boxes per shift, depending on distances and disposition of material.
- Level and tarp boxes for safe travel prior to transporting.
- Prepared to depart from planned operations to “on call” status for high priority missions.
- Annotate paperwork regarding out of ordinary events, i.e., DOT stops, flat tires, delay @ mill, etc.
- Operate fleet vehicles by “Driving Defensively” and by being alert and proactive in the prevention of accidents and/or “Road Rage"
- Operate the bed-lift hydraulic controls and mounted loading/unloading hydraulic systems on the roll-off equipped truck.
- Perform physical labor as necessary in the performance of the mission assigned.
- Perform special assignments as directed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Geographic knowledge of Metropolitan areas and their road networks
- Knowledge of Shipping and Receiving procedures.
- Ability to safely navigate congested roads and maintain an even temperament.
- Ability to project a professional appearance and attitude within the company and to our customers.
- Ability to read a map and/or follow written directions.
- Requires physical hand/eye coordination to load/unload boxes from vehicle.
- Requirement for at least one year driving experience.
- Ability to function day to day with minimal supervision, but primarily on information and guidance.
- Ability to work overtime, both scheduled and unscheduled, as seasonal needs require
- Position requires considerable physical exertion at times, i.e., lifting and climbing.
- Work environment results in occasional exposure to extreme levels of temperature, humidity, air pollution, noise pollution, noxious gases, etc. as well as exposure to situations that could result in physical trauma if safety precautions are not precisely followed.
- Work consists of routine standard procedures and tasks where simple analytical ability is required to select and execute actions.
