Position Overview:
The Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of sulfuric acid manufacturing equipment. This role involves monitoring and controlling chemical processes, ensuring the correct handling of hazardous materials, and upholding strict safety, quality, and environmental standards.
What you will be doing:
- Operate chemical processing equipment such as reactors, mixers, pumps, heat exchangers, and absorption columns to produce sulfuric acid in compliance with safety and quality standards.
- Safely manage the handling, transfer, and packaging of chemicals, including hazardous substances, following OSHA and EPA regulations.
- Perform routine rounds of equipment, including monitoring pressure gauges, flow meters, and temperature indicators to ensure safe operations.
- Conduct laboratory testing and quality control procedures to verify chemical product specifications and report any discrepancies.
- Accurately complete and maintain operational records, including production logs, safety reports, and batch reports.
- Perform emergency shutdowns and process adjustments as needed, ensuring minimal impact on product quality and safety.
- Assist in the continuous improvement of process operations and safety standards through participation in team meetings and training programs.
- Continuously monitor key process parameters like flow rates, pressures, temperatures, and levels, using displays, graphics, and trend logs.
- Respond to alarms, alerts, and emergency situations, taking immediate corrective actions to limit risk to personnel, plant equipment, and production
Key Skills:
- In-depth understanding of chemical processes and plant operations, including familiarity with pumps, heat exchangers, reactors, and mixing equipment.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively with colleagues, engineers, and supervisors.
- Ability to interpret complex process flow diagrams, control panel displays, and data logs to monitor and optimize plant operations.
- Highly focused on maintaining safety, environmental compliance, and operational efficiency in all tasks.
- Able to make quick, informed decisions in emergency situations to minimize downtime and ensure safety.
Basic Qualifications:
- Must be able to lift and handle 50 lb. chemical containers and perform repetitive physical tasks throughout the shift.
- Ability to work in a chemical plant environment with exposure to various hazardous chemicals, weather conditions, and high temperatures.
- Must be willing to work a 12-hour rotating shift, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Able to work at heights, climb ladders, and navigate confined spaces while adhering to safety guidelines.
- Must wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as steel-toe boots, hard hats, flame-resistant clothing, gloves, and safety goggles.
- Valid Driver’s License/ID.
- Current Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) or the ability to obtain one.
- Basic knowledge of chemistry, math, and the ability to read and understand gauges, diagrams, and control panel displays.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience working as a Chemical Plant Operator or in a similar manufacturing setting.
- Associate of Applied Science in Process Technology (PTEC), Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Familiarity with PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) and DCS (Distributed Control Systems) for process monitoring and control.
Education:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and a min of 3 plus years of operational/process technology experience in a chemical plant, prior line management experience preferred: or 1-year Process Technology certificate from a college or technical school, with the above experience
