Job Title: Special Ed Auditory Impaired Aide (non-certified)            

Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt

Reports to: Principal for the building to which assigned

                     Director of Regional School for the Deaf                      

Pay Grade: Support Pay 6

Primary Purpose: Special Ed AI Aides are assigned fulltime in the Regional Day School Program for the Deaf to facilitate spoken and signed communication for auditorily impaired students when in mainstream classes and to assist the teacher in the deaf-education classroom in carrying out the prescribed instructional program for each student. Classroom duties and responsibilities will be assigned by the teacher of the deaf.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

 

  • High School Diploma or its equivalent/ At least 60 college hours
  • Knowledge of Sign Language (SEE preferred) and ability to communicate with profoundly Deaf/Hard of hearing students
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate.

 

            Special Knowledge Skills/Experience:

 

  • Some experience in working with children
  • Temperament to work with Deaf/Hard of hearing students
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with teacher(s) and students
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate.

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Assist the teacher with the instruction of auditorily-impaired students utilizing signed language, speech, and amplification
  • Accept the teacher as the authority in the classroom
  • Demonstrate skills in communicating with auditorily-impaired students on many different levels of understanding
  • Assist the teacher in developing language, thinking and independent skills in auditorily-impaired students
  • Assist Deaf/Hard of hearing students with speech practices and auditory training
  • Assist auditorily-impaired students in to mainstream classes by being the communication link
  • Assist mainstreamed students in developing study skills, completing projects or assignments, or reviewing for classes as necessary (this may include tutoring as directed by the teacher)
  • Provide communication between mainstreamed teacher and teacher of the deaf
  • Check hearing aids and auditory training equipment and record/report problems
  • Be familiar with all materials used in the classroom as well as those available in the RDSPD library
  • Assist the teacher in preparing materials for classroom use
  • Conduct group and individual activities with students
  • Be positive and pleasant when working with students
  • Exercise firm but kind control of students’ behavior, abiding by the teacher’s policy
  • Assist students in developing appropriate behavior in all school settings (including playground, halls, bathroom, lunchroom, library, and other areas)
  • Assist students in developing independence and self-reliance within the school setting
  • Assist the teacher in supervision of students in all activities of the school, including meeting the buses when the students arrive at school and as they leave
  • Supervise students before and after school to accommodate transportation needs of out of district students
  • Assist with toileting needs including diapering when necessary
  • Assist the teacher in maintaining and managing records and instructional materials, including the use of computers
  • Operate audio-visual and classroom equipment
  • Maintain professional work standards of punctuality, dress, and confidentiality
  • Share responsibility for maintaining an orderly and attractive classroom
  • Refer questions about the RDSPD program or students in the program to the teacher and maintain all aspects of student confidentiality
  • Be able to work a split assignment as needed (between classes or schools)
  • Be flexible and willing to adjust schedules to meet immediate needs of auditorily-impaired students on a daily basis
  • Participate in regularly scheduled staff development with RDSPD in signed language and other areas germane to the education of auditorily-impaired students
  • Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of the RDSPD or school principal

Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress; Repetitive hand motions; prolonged use of computer. Must be able to lift 50lbs. occasionally with assistance. Occasional prolonged and irregular hours.
