ECU Health Duplin Hospital is an 81-bed facility located in Kenansville, North Carolina. The 15-bed emergency department serves approximately 25,000 patients per year. In addition to providing general medical and surgical services, ECU Health Duplin Hospital offers chemotherapy and other cancer infusion interventions and has earned national designation as a Primary Stroke Center.
Position Summary
The Laboratory Assistant processes outpatient test requests.
As a Laboratory Assistant, you will:

Perform venous and capillary collection of blood specimens for analysis and process specimens for analysis and reference testing. With supervision, may perform waived and moderately complex testing. May perform chain-of-custody drug collections. Performs various other support services for the laboratory as assigned. Maintains required documentation to comply with accrediting agencies.
- Perform duties consistent with written procedures and regulatory requirements.
- Supports the department in achieving department goals for service, quality, regulatory compliance, financial performance, patient satisfaction, healthy work environment, and integration of intra and inter-departmental activities.
Minimum Requirements
- High School or equivalent (or higher)
- Completion of a structured phlebotomy training course and clinical rotation is recommended.
- 6 months experience in a hospital or reference laboratory setting, physician office, outpatient clinic, or other medical setting is preferred.
- Phlebotomy certification by ASCP or another nationally recognized certifying agency is preferred.
National Healthcare Association (NHA) -Clinical Laboratory Phlebotomy Examination (CLPlb), American Society of Clinical Pathologists- Phlebotomy Technician Examination [PBT(ASCP)], International Academy of Phlebotomy Sciences (IAPS), National Phlebotomy Association (NPA), American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT), National Phlebotomy Certification Examination (NPCE), National Phlebotomy Solutions (NPS), American Medical Technologists (AMT), or another national certification as approved by Laboratory Service Line leadership.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of medical terms and medical laboratory tests is preferred.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Basic computer skills and the ability to learn new software rapidly.
- Ability to follow written procedures, take direction, and assimilate instructions quickly.
- Ability to work independently and manage priorities and workload.
- Ability to perform detailed work, work with frequent interruptions, multi-task, and problem-solve.
- Ability to maintain composure in all situations, including guest, patient, and medical staff interactions and emergencies.
