The Respiratory Care Practitioner III functions under the clinical supervision of the Medical Director of Respiratory Care and overall supervision of the Manager, Assistant Manager, and Respiratory Care Supervisor. This role involves providing safe, expedient, and cost-effective respiratory care services, responding to patient needs, and documenting respiratory care provided.
This position is part of our Clinical Ladder program, which recognizes healthcare professionals demonstrating advanced knowledge, critical thinking skills, and professional development. Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-specific care to patients. Assesses prescribed respiratory care by acquiring and evaluating clinical data and assessing cardiopulmonary status based on patient age. Initiates respiratory care plans upon admission, identifying primary respiratory problems, goals, and interventions. Updates care plans at least once per shift relative to progress toward goals.
- Provides therapeutic interventions with oxygen therapy, aerosol therapy, airway care, lung expansion, bronchial hygiene, invasive and noninvasive mechanical ventilation. Uses 'Red Rules' and Patient Safety Behaviors to ensure safe patient care.
- Records all patient and family education in patient medical records. Provides and assesses information from respiratory parameter studies, peak flow measurements, pulse oximetry monitoring, ABG/VBG/CBG results, capnography, pulmonary mechanics/graphics monitors, hemodynamic monitoring, cardiac output monitoring.
- Incorporates department protocol-driven care to direct clinical practice. Maintains confidentiality of patient information. Uses department scripts to effectively communicate with other departments, patients, families, coworkers, and students in person or over the phone. Demonstrates safe operation of equipment, adhering to department policy, safety, disinfection, infection control, and quality control standards. Demonstrates effective computer skills for electronic charting, billing, and respiratory order processing.
Qualifications:
- American Heart Association BLS Certification required. Associate Degree or higher in an approved CoARC program for Respiratory Care. Active licensure with the North Carolina Respiratory Care Board upon hire and maintained yearly. Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) certification required. American Heart Association ACLS certification required. AHA PALS and NRP certifications required if working in the Children's hospital. At least 10 years of experience in respiratory care.
