Nature of Work
Edgecombe County Public Schools (ECPS) is seeking qualified individuals to serve as part-time tutors to provide academic support to students with disabilities (EC) in various subjects and grade levels. Tutors will work under the direction of designated school administrators and teachers to reinforce classroom instruction, address learning gaps, and promote student academic success. This is a temporary, part-time position for the remainder of the 2024-2025 school year.
Position: Part-Time Tutor
Dates of Employment: February 3, 2025 – May 30, 2025
Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 5 hours per day (Specific daily schedule to be determined by school assignment)
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field is preferred, but not required.
- Valid teaching license is preferred, but not required.
- Experience working with students in an educational setting is desirable.
- Strong knowledge of subject matter in assigned tutoring areas.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively with students of diverse backgrounds and learning styles.
- Patience, flexibility, and a positive attitude.
- Ability to follow directions and work collaboratively with school staff.
Minimum Training and Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalence
- Associates Degree or evidence of current enrollment in associate program
Reports to: School Administrator
Job Goal: To provide instructional support to students through reinforcement of classroom instruction, addressing learning gaps, and promoting student academic success.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Provide individualized and small-group tutoring sessions to students with disabilities in assigned subjects.
- Reinforce concepts and skills taught in the classroom, using various teaching strategies and resources.
- Assist students with completing homework assignments, projects, and test preparation.
- Monitor student progress and communicate with teachers regarding student performance and needs.
- Maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions and student progress.
- Collaborate with teachers and other school staff to ensure effective support for students.
- Adhere to ECPS policies and procedures.
- Create a positive and supportive learning environment for students.
- Utilize provided curriculum materials and resources effectively.
- Adapt tutoring methods to meet the diverse learning styles and needs of students.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Physical Requirements: Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, typewriters, calculators, pencils, scissors, and equipment for children with special needs, etc. Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Due to amount of time spent standing and/or walking, physical requirements are consistent with those for Light Work.
- Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or composite characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
- Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments and/or directions from superiors.
- Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, handbooks, forms, lists, etc. Requires the ability to prepare correspondence, simple reports, forms, instructional materials, etc., using prescribed format.
- Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English.
- Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; and to utilize decimals and percentages.
- Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
- Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using office equipment.
- Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of office machines, etc. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
- Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
- Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress.
- Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Must be able to communicate via telephone.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge:
- A strong understanding of the subject(s) they will be tutoring (e.g., mathematics, reading, science, social studies). This includes knowledge of relevant curriculum standards and grade-level expectations.
- Basic understanding of effective teaching and learning strategies, including differentiated instruction, learning styles, and assessment techniques.
- General knowledge of child and/or adolescent developmental stages, including cognitive, social, and emotional development, relevant to the grade level(s) they will be tutoring.
- Familiarity with relevant school district policies, particularly those related to student conduct, safety, and confidentiality.
- Basic understanding of different assessment methods
Skills:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively explain concepts, provide feedback, and communicate with students, teachers, and parents (if necessary).
- Ability to build rapport with students, create a positive and supportive learning environment, and work effectively with diverse personalities.
- Ability to present information clearly and concisely, adapt methods to meet individual student needs, and use various instructional resources effectively.
- Ability to manage time effectively, keep accurate records of tutoring sessions and student progress, and organize materials.
- Ability to identify student learning challenges, address those challenges, and monitor student progress.
- Ability to listen attentively to students, understand their questions and concerns, and provide appropriate support.
- Proficiency in using basic technology tools, such as computers, educational software, and online resources.
Abilities:
- Ability to adjust methods and strategies to meet the diverse learning styles and needs of individual students.
- Ability to encourage and motivate students to learn, build their confidence, and foster a positive attitude towards learning.
- Ability to work effectively with teachers, school administrators, and other staff members to support student success.

- Ability to remain patient and understanding when working with students who are struggling academically.

SALARY: Edgecombe County Public Schools Tutor Salary Schedule
- Licensed Teacher: $30.00 per hour
- Non-Licensed Tutor: $25.00 per hour
