What are the responsibilities and job description for the Applied Research Scientist position at EdgeTech?
For more than 50 years, EdgeTech has been the industry leader in the design and manufacture of advanced underwater sonar systems for applications involving seabed survey, target detection, object identification, mooring instrumentation, and acoustic tracking/positioning. Our products are used to support a variety of customers, from offshore oil and gas to fisheries/science/underwater research, defense, and police/fire search and rescue
We’re looking for an engineer/scientist with interest in applying signal processing to develop algorithms that enable new capabilities in next-generation sonar systems. Typical assignments include algorithm design, analysis, and implementation; sonar system analysis; involvement in software and hardware prototyping and test activities; documentation and planning; as well as sea testing, data collection, and post-trial analysis.
Job Responsibilities
- Design algorithms for processing of sonar signals including waveform design, beamforming, broadband processing, and detection.
- Develop processing algorithms and assess their performance. Interpret results.
- Collaborate with real-time code developers and modeling/simulation analysts to develop and integrate system software.
- Develop simple and reliable signal processing algorithms for a variety of processors, to include ARM’s, SoC’s/SoM's and FPGAs
- Assist with the development of signal processing specifications and their implementation
- Test software, firmware and full sonar solutions in simulation, hardware-in-the-loop, and field demonstrations
- Collaborate with a cross-functional team testing your contributions and analyzing performance
- Support the engineering, production, and sales/marketing teams with productization of technologies and solutions
- Understand broad product objectives to develop and maintain relationships with major customers.
- Collaborate with other engineers, customers and the technical community to advance sonar capabilities for current and future applications
Job Requirements
- This job can be filled at multiple levels, depending upon the successful candidate’s education and experience. Minimum education required is an M.S. degree in an engineering or science related discipline plus five year’s related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with signal processing theory and applications
- Experience with scripting and analysis tools such as Matlab and Python
- Experience with planning and conducting sea trials and surveys.
- Highly effective written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work effectively in a team and set priorities
- Work with sonar imaging technologies or hydrographic applications is a big plus.
- Familiarity with hardware (amplifiers, antennas/transducers, filters), and digital processing with FPGAs, GPUs, CPUs, is desirable but not required.
- Work will include a mix of field and office assignments, with domestic and international travel as part of the job.
