Edgewater Technical Associates is seeking qualified candidates for a Fire Protection Mechanical Designer opportunity in Oak Ridge, TN to support the Y12 National Security Complex.
The Y12 National Security Complex, simply known as Y12, has three primary national security missions that protect our country and our allies around the world. Maintaining the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile, reducing global threats, and fueling the U.S. Navy’s nuclear propulsion program are the key activities at this historic site.

Job Description:
As a Fire Protection Mechanical Designer, you’ll support the Mission Engineering division with Fire Sprinkler Systems design output for facility operations and work directly with design engineers to develop diagrams, install drawings, data sheets, equipment specifications, equivalency evaluations, calculations, etc.
Qualifications:
- Must have an associate’s degree in related discipline Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) / Fire Protection.
- Must have at least 3 or more years of progressive and relevant experience in HVAC and/or Fire Sprinkler System Design.
- Technical knowledge of related engineering systems, applications of engineering and construction methods and materials, and engineering application of computers.
- Ability to plan, perform tasks and multi-task on multiple projects.
- The position requires the ability to present information clearly and effectively through the oral and written words and utilize automated workflow systems.
- Must be able to coordinate verification and validation of documents with technical and operations personnel prior to release for approval and implementation.
- Ability to develop and maintain historical information.
- Ability to prepare, interpret, maintain, and incorporate requirements of technical drawings and operating documents.
- Must be eligible for a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance and maintain eligibility throughout duration of employment.
- Must be a US Citizen.
Preferred Job Qualifications:
- Experience with 3D modeling is preferred.
- Experience with Smart Plant 3D software.
- Nuclear related design experience in an Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) or DOE regulated environment is desirable.
- Knowledgeable in DOE Standards (STD), including DOE O 420.1C, Facility Safety and DOE STD 1066-2016, Fire Protection.
- Familiarity with Health, Safety, and Security (HASS) fire protection hydraulic calculation program (or similar hydraulic calculation program).
- Familiarity with Trane Trace (or similar programs).
- This position requires a DOE Q level security clearance; however, all candidates will be considered regardless of current security clearance status.
