NOTE: The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has issued new requirements for health care and congregant care facilities to decrease the risk of COVID-19 outbreaks. Based on the CDPH public health mandate, all candidates for positions at Edgewood Center must provide proof of vaccination. Edgewood Center will consider applicants with ADA and Title VII exemptions on a case-by-case basis.
Mission Statement: Edgewood is the place to begin for any child or youth to get the mental health care, social services, and academic support they need from highly trained, welcoming professionals.
Peer Partner- Redwood City-This is an hourly position, part-time (20 hours) Mon-Fri, 2pm-8pm, on-site.
Program Description
The Edgewood Drop-in Centers are resource centers designed specifically for 18-25-year-olds. Dinner is served nightly, and computers with internet access, hygiene products, snacks and public transportation tokens are available to those in need. Referrals and resources are provided to address homelessness, legal issues, medical or mental health symptoms, academic and vocational barriers, and other concerns identified by our participants. Regularly scheduled programming includes recreational opportunities, community meetings, social nights, vocational workshops, educational activities, workshops addressing independent living and daily living skills, arts/music exploration, and a myriad of groups and activities addressing personal health and wellness.
Position Description
Peer Partners facilitate a safe and welcoming environment for Drop-in Center participants; offer support and peer mentorship; provide empathy, validation, feedback, and unconditional support; give resources; and plan, implement, and co-facilitate groups and activities. To inform programming and connect with participants, Peer Partners, use their own personal life experiences, which may include: mental illness, physical health or medical issues, involvement with the juvenile justice or child welfare systems, substance use, trauma, immigration, family/community violence, and/or other experiences similar to those of our 18-25-year-old participants.

  • Ability to facilitate a safe and welcoming environment for current and new participants.
  • Provides active support to all participants as an informal counselor by listening to and identifying with their experiences, particularly around relationships, attitudes, personal goals, and rights.
  • Employs supportive interpersonal skills, including validation, listening, empathy, responding to feelings and content, prompting, summarizing, problem-solving, use of humor, and limit-setting.
  • Ability to assist young adults in meeting their personal goals.
  • Calm and professional response to the crisis, including mediation and de-escalation techniques.
Essential Functions
  • Provides oversight of programming on and off-site, ensuring the engagement and safety of all participants.
  • In collaboration with the supervisor, colleagues, volunteers, and participants, the Peer Partner plans, coordinates, and co-facilitates activities and/or groups such as (but not limited to): therapeutic social support activities, skill-building groups, weekend activities, healthy evening meals, outings and enrichment activities around the Bay Area.
  • Encourages and supports participants in sharing their voice and perspective to enhance programming, advocate for their or the needs of all young adults, and/or to influence programs/policies.
  • Conducts outreach activities, and administrative and marketing tasks for DIC program operations and to build professional skills.
  • Regarding 18-25-year-olds as persons with dignity and competence, engaging them as full collaborators in service planning, delivery, and evaluation.
  • Understands and values cultural and racial differences, their alternative perspectives on mental illness, help-seeking and alternative healing practices, as well as lifestyles, goals, family, and community life.
  • Attends and actively participates in supervision; enlists support, requests and integrates feedback.
  • Maintains positive work relationships respectfully and collaboratively.
  • Completes documentation and required paperwork thoroughly and promptly, which includes meeting monthly efficiency requirements for the position.
  • Respects participants' privacy and handles sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Maintains confidential health records of young adults in compliance with the Edgewood, EPSDT, and San Mateo County Behavioral Health standards and regulations.
  • Collaborates and communicates with internal and external stakeholders in a manner that promotes: agency mission, vision, and values; agency, region, and area goals; consumer and family satisfaction; and highest quality care.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Applied Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Personal life experiences may include: mental illness, physical health or medical issues, involvement with the juvenile justice or child welfare systems, substance use, trauma, immigration, and family/community violence.
  • Preferred experience working with children, teens, or 14-25-year-olds on a one-on-one or group basis.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work afternoon and evening hours Monday-Friday, and some weekends.
Physical, Environmental, and Mental Requirements:
  • Strength and Motion: Occasionally required to push/pull objects up to 20 lbs., and to lift/carry objects up to 20 lbs. in weight. Frequently required to perform moderately difficult manipulative tasks (e.g., typing, writing, etc.). Must be able to walk, stand, and sit for extended periods. Must be able to climb stairs, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
  • Vision and Hearing: Frequently required to read (electronic and printed) documents. Must distinguish normal sounds with some background noise (e.g., answering the phone, interacting with residents and staff, etc.). Must speak, understand, and be understood using the English language.
  • Cognitive: Frequently required to concentrate on moderate details with constant interruption. Must be able to attend to a task/function for 20-45 minutes at a time. Frequently required to understand and relate to specific ideas, sometimes several at a time. Must remember multiple tasks/assignments given to self and others over several days.
  • Work Environment: Exposure to varied office and mixed (e.g., residential, community, and office).
  • Equipment: Frequently required to use a computer, phone, and fax machine.
The hourly rate range for this position is: $24.75-$27.23
