POSITION SUMMARY
The Activity Assistant assists the Lifestyle Coordinator to provide group and individual activities for
the residents.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties are normal for this position. This list is not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
· Communicates with the Lifestyle Director and Coordinator on a regular basis to inform, exchange ideas, coordinate services and discuss format for individual and group programming. Also shares insight, information and reports responses and/or progress regarding residents.
· Carries out large, small, and one-to-one events for the purpose of providing any and all of the following: a friendly visitor; sensory stimulation; reality orientation; cognitive stimulation.
· Evaluates recreational programming on an ongoing basis through surveys and direct interaction with residents and families.
· Communicates with other departments regarding assistance needed in setup and need for use of common/shared space.
· Assists with transportation to events.
· Encourages Residents to attend the activities and build enthusiasm for the programs offered.
· Assists with volunteer services.
· Informs residents and staff to changes in scheduled programming in a timely manner when possible.
· Assists staff in maintaining attendance records.
· Recognizes signs and symptoms which signify a change in condition that require nursing intervention and reports these changes to the appropriate channels. Shares resident information with staff on a need-to-know basis.
· Remains alert for conditions that threaten the safety and well being of staff and residents. Reports hazardous conditions to appropriate channels.
· Attends training, meetings, and continuing education workshops (as approved) and keeps current trends through reading and conferring with peers.
· Abides by community standards and guidelines.
· Assists in creating a positive and sincere impression of Edgewood Summit and Staff, and Visitors through a pleasant and professional manner at all times.
· Maintains resident confidentiality when appropriate.
· Helps publish and distribute community newsletter and calendars.
· Willingness to work flexible hours including evenings, holidays, weekends or as needed.
· Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS

Educational Requirements and Experience:
· Minimum educational requirements include a high school diploma or GED
· Associates degree preferred or equivalent with emphasis in recreation, gerontology, health promotion & wellness, sociology or related field.
· Basic knowledge of Memory Care and Skilled Nursing regulations.
· One to three years experience in social or recreational programming in a senior setting.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
· Language Ability:
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing and speaking the primary language of the residents.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
· Mathematical Skills:
- Ability to do basic arithmetic. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret graphs.
· Cognitive Demands:
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
· Computer Skills:
- Ability to use Microsoft Office. Ability to use software to design calendars and signs. Ability to use the Internet.
· Competencies:
- Ability to operate general office equipment.
ENVIRONMENTAL ADAPTABILITY
· Works primarily indoors in a climate controlled setting
· Possible exposure to unpleasant odors
· Possible exposure to chemicals as identified in the MSDS Manual
· Continuous exposure to residents who are ill, confused, irritable and irrational
