Custodian

Use your skills to make a difference with visitors at the Edison and Ford Winter Estates -- one of the most-visited historic home sites in the country and a key historic and cultural landmark in southwest Florida. A National Register Historic Site open to the public since 1947, the site contains more than twenty acres of historic buildings and gardens, including the winter homes of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, their botanical laboratory, and a 15,000 square foot museum.

Job Summary

This position will be responsible for cleaning of offices and public spaces on a regular schedule. Also, under the direction of the Chief Curator, conducts regular preservation cleaning of historic buildings.

Schedule/Hours

The Estates is open 7 days a week year-round with evening hours during the holidays and other special events throughout the year. This is a full-time position with benefits. The successful applicant must be able to work hours other than the regular schedule, including weekends, holidays, and occasional nights .

Essential Job Responsibilities

• Cleaning of public and staff areas including galleries, offices, and restrooms.
• Care of historic buildings
• Participate in regular training and other related opportunities to expand understanding of cleaning historic sites and public spaces
• Assists with the setup and cleanup of special events as needed
• Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities

This job has no supervisory responsibilities; however, frequently works collaboratively with other staff and volunteers

Minimum Requirements

• Driver’s license
• Related experience (cleaning/janitorial work)
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
• Experience in a flexible task and teamwork environment
• Ability to work independently

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

• The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds
• Able to work in public and non-public environments and be safety conscious as well as considerate of public guests as well as staff
• Occasionally exposed to adverse weather conditions, including wet and/or humid conditions and extreme heat; moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock
