POSITION OVERVIEW

About the Position

 The job of the Deaf-Hard-of-Hearing Substitute Teacher K-12 is done for the purpose of assuming the normal duties of the classroom teacher.  

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree

Experience

  • Previous experience working with children in a classroom setting

Other Requirements

  • Must possess or have the ability to possess a valid Level One Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card by the time of hire.
  • Must be fluent in ASL

Preferred Requirements

  • 1 or more years teaching

 

ESSENTIAL JOB TASKS

  • Reports to the building principal, school administrative assistant, or substitute coordinator upon arrival at the school
  • Maintains as fully as possible the established routines and procedures of the school and classroom to which assigned
  • Teaches lesson plan as outlined by absent teacher
  • Performs all extra duties for the absent teacher as required by the building principal
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated
  • Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interest, and abilities of the students
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation, pertaining to students
  • Remains at school during the entire school day unless excused by the building principal or designated representative
  • Adheres to professional code of conduct
  • Maintains regular attendance and punctuality
  • Demonstrates knowledge and incorporates technology in daily tasks, as required
  • Maintains a professional appearance as an example for students
  • Provide a strong language model using ASL and written English (i.e., reading, writing, vocabulary and communication skills).
  • Be able to work effectively with a wide range of students.
  • Helping each student learn subject using both American Sign Language and Written English.
  • Knowledge of student’s needs in the academic, social, and emotional areas.
  • Must have high energy and a willingness to devote the time required to help students be successful in the content and language acquisition.
  • Be current with differential instructional strategies to teach DHH students.
  • In the absence of the regular classroom teacher to help students to learn subject matter and/or skills that are required for scheduled lessons and to provide meaningful instruction for assigned classrooms.
  • Reports to school office at beginning of school day to pick up required materials/schedule of classes and at the end of the school day to return materials.  Follows sign out procedures as prescribed by the principal.
  • Carries out a program of study prescribed in the lesson plans left by the classroom teacher.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and objectives as indicated in the lesson plans for the lessons, units, or projects assigned.
  • Maintains a neat and orderly classroom.  Straightens chairs, tables, clears chalkboard, etc.
  • Takes attendance in accordance with school procedures.
  • Indicates to students at beginning of class the basic expectations for behavior in the class in accordance with Sequoia Deaf School policies.
  • Ensures that the students are never left unattended in the classroom.
  • May perform duties usually required of absent teacher such as lunchroom duty, hall monitoring, etc.
  • Knows emergency evacuation routes for the classrooms assigned.
  • Knows procedures for referring students who are disciplinary problems.
  • Knows school procedures and regulations.
  • May participate in IEP meeting as needed.

Working Conditions

Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, crouch, bend, walking up and down stairs/ramps, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held learning devices and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
