Job Summary:
Responsible for the design and drafting of municipal projects including roadway, water, sewer and drainage. The Designer will perform a variety of tasks using programs and procedures of the firm to design projects for regional cities, counties, TIRZ’s and special districts. This will consist of developing detailed civil designs, engineering calculations, coordination with support discipline activities, coordination with public and private utilities, and quality assurance and control to produce construction drawings for public works projects.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities:
Prepare full set of plans containing paving, grading, water, sanitary, storm, and drainage area maps in Public Infrastructure.
- Create surfaces from data received from surveyor and generate plan and profiles using AutoCad Civil 3D and/or Geopak.
- Help coordinate plan sets with team when needed.
- Create plan and profile sheets and exhibits.
- Address and understand red-line drawings as well as mark-ups.
- Gain knowledge on how to prepare base drawing with all utilities.
- Comprehension of Data Short Cuts by creating working folder.
- Draw Detention Ponds and calculate Volumes.
- Prepare and understand most components of Drainage Area Maps.
- Identify potential design conflicts and apply innovative problem solving to determine solutions for Project Managers.
- Other duties as required.
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Understand standard Details and Blocks.
- General understanding of:
- Plats surveying
- Survey data and topo points
- Survey drawings
- Attention to detail and thoroughness in completing multi-step tasks.
- Ability to manage time efficiently.
- Excellent communications skills: interpersonal, listening, oral, and written.
- Skilled in PC usage and associated software.
- Ability to generate layout drawings from sketches and specifications.
- Knowledgeable of standard drafting practices and procedures.
- Ability to work and communicate professionally with all levels of the firm.
- Able to work with minimal supervision.
Work Environment:
Work is performed in a professional office environment.
Education, certification and experience:
- Must have strong understanding of AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or
- Working knowledge of CAD standards, Civil 3D label styles, sheet set manager and drawing setup.
- Associate degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 5-10 years of experience in civil engineering emphasizing Public Works projects.
Physical Requirements:
- This is largely a sedentary role. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate both orally and in writing.
- The employee is occasionally required to move about the office to operate office productivity machinery.
- May require the ability to position his or herself to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
- The employee may be required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
