Job Summary
The Structural/Bridge Engineer will support the Transportation Group in the design and development of bridge and structural projects for TxDOT, counties, municipalities, and private clients. This role will also assist in structural components related to roadway and water/wastewater treatment facility projects within the Houston Metro area.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with structural evaluation, development, and design of bridges and related infrastructure
- Perform structural analysis and design using hand calculations and computer modeling tools
- Develop detailed structural design calculations for prestressed concrete and steel girder bridges, retaining walls, and drainage structures
- Prepare project deliverables including drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and engineering reports
- Coordinate with engineering teams to resolve RFIs and ensure technical accuracy
- Conduct quality control reviews and ensure timely, cost-effective project delivery
- Collaborate with internal teams, clients, and subconsultants to align project goals
- Support field site visits and document observations in written reports
- Participate in internal technical training and knowledge sharing sessions
- Attend kick-off and design review meetings and interact with clients as needed
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineering staff
Required Skills and Competencies
- Proficiency in structural analysis and bridge design software (e.g., PGSuper/BridgeLink, Bentley LEAP Suite, RC-Pier, MIDAS, SAP, STAAD)
- Experience with drafting/design software such as MicroStation, AutoCAD, OpenRoads Designer (ORD), OpenBridge Designer (OBD), and Revit
- Ability to conduct finite element analysis and develop automation tools using basic programming skills
- Strong technical writing, analytical, and communication skills
- Ability to prepare budgets and manage schedules for bridge design tasks
- Familiarity with AASHTO LRFD design code
- Collaborative team player with a self-motivated, detail-oriented approach
- Experience preparing plan sets for submittals at various stages (30%, 60%, 90%, 100%)
- Effective communication with clients, municipalities, utility companies, and other external stakeholders
Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Civil or Structural Engineering
- EIT certification required; Texas PE license preferred or in progress
- 3 years of experience in structural engineering design
- Bridge design experience preferred
- Experience with TxDOT or similar public agency roadway and bridge projects
- Strong background in highway design, with exposure to water/wastewater or site civil design a plus
- Knowledge of CADD/Design platforms (MicroStation/OpenRoads and AutoCAD/Civil 3D)
- Experience in land development and/or public works infrastructure projects
- Previous use of computer programming in engineering applications is a plus
Work Environment
This role operates in a professional office environment with occasional site visits. The role routinely uses standard office equipment.
Physical Requirements
- This is largely a sedentary role. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate project plans both orally and in writing.
- The employee is occasionally required to move about the office to operate office productivity machinery or maneuver through a construction site safely.
- May require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
- The employee may be required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
- Proper office attire required to be presentable for out of office meetings.
