DESCRIPTION:
The Career and Academic Advisor will work closely with all Student Services departments, including (but not limited to): Enrollment Services, Financial Aid, Credentials and Evaluations, Testing and Assessment, Outreach, Career Action Center, Veterans Resource Center, Athletics, Counseling and Resource Center, Services for Students with Disabilities. This role will also work closely with academic and instructional departments, with a strong emphasis on collaborative co-advising with faculty and other program advisors.
This is an exempt position that reports to the Director of Academic Advising.

In the Advising Resource Center (ARC) Career and Academic Advisor role, collaborative strategies and responsibilities below will be practiced across all academic areas and with all students. Each advisor in the ARC is also assigned a speciality area of focus with one of our transfer pathway areas. This transfer speciality will involve collaboration with affiliated departments and caseload-based advising of students declared within that pathway.
Responsibilities of the Career and Academic Advisor include, but are not limited to:
- Review student information in Advisor Center to ensure smooth registration process
- Record detailed and accurate student notes, including current/identified data points
- Communicate with students via in-person, email, phone, and virtual modalities.
- Create Academic Plans based on a program of study and in accordance to funding requirements.
- Provide culturally competent holistic advising and referrals to resources across campus.
- Assist students in navigating policies and procedures, inclusive of SAP processes, appeals, petitions, deadlines, and impacts of enrollment changes.
- Conduct unofficial transcript evaluations.
- Interpret official transfer evaluations to determine course planning.
- Review and update placements (when applicable under Advising).
- Guide students in career exploration.
- Help students navigate transfer steps, utilizing knowledge regarding agreements, articulations, and partnerships.
- Participate in cross-campus advising by providing partner advisors relevant, meaningful, and accurate information.
- Collect and share program-relevant information with the advising department.
- Attend division meetings as required by specific liaison or division role.
- Provide and participate in collaborative training and professional development opportunities, inclusive of Advising Academy sessions.
- Contribute to and collaborate on effective recruitment and retention strategies and projects.
- Contribute to accurate note-taking during advising sessions.
- Help determine and collect relevant statistical information.
- Critically assess patterns and student cases.
- Attend and contribute to staff meeting discussions and team strategies.
- Participate in state and campus committees, workgroups, and taskforces as directed.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor¿s degree OR equivalent combination of relevant educational and work experience.
- One year of experience in academic advising, student programming, or similar student success and retention programs.
- Experience presenting, and/or facilitating workshops and presentations.
- Exhibits an appreciation of, a sensitivity to, and respect for a diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological and ethnic backgrounds.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master¿s degree.
- Knowledge of student development theories, practices, and Guided Pathways
- Experience with student management systems, or similar database system.
PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is typically performed in an office setting, and onsite/in-person. The ability to sit at a desk/computer station, bend, stoop, walk and generally move around the office to consult with others, work within a busy environment and remain focused on tasks. Inventory management requires some lifting and moving of objects up to 30lbs. Excellent communication skills are essential. This includes the ability to speak clearly and fully comprehend written and spoken English and will include communication with people for whom English is not their first language.
