Position Information
This is an on-call position that fills in for absences. Work must be performed onsite and in person. The Substitute Paraeducator (DHH) assists certificated staff in delivering instructional programs by working in specialized areas such as deaf and hard of hearing (DHH). This position adapts and implements educational materials to students' specialized needs. This position monitors students' progress, behavior, and safety. Additionally, this position performs a variety of routine clerical and office tasks supporting teachers and other district staff.
Position Type: Substitutes are guest/casual positions that have reasonable assurance for the remainder of the current academic year or term. Subsitutes are required to submit renewal paperwork to maintain their employment each school year. Substitutes fill a variety of temporary vacancies on a day-to-day basis as needed.
Shift Details: An employee's total work hours and the designated beginning and ending times may vary. The work location and schedule depend on the vacancy that is being filled.
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Hourly Rate: $24.00 per hour

The Washington State Health Care Authority (HCA) provides access to health care services and retirement packages. Eligibility for retirement at the time of hire is determined by employees who work at least 3.50 hours per day in a continuing position.

Required Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Be at least eighteen years of age and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent
- In addition, a paraeducator must meet one of the following:
- Hold an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university
- Have earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at the 100 level or higher at an accredited college or university
- Completed an apprenticeship as a paraeducator, in a program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council
- Received a passing score on one of the following PESB approved assessments: ETS ParaPro Assessment, Pearson Paraprofessional Assessment, or the Master Teacher Inc. Paraeducator Online Training Program
- Human Resources may waive above requirements on a case by case basis for non-Title I funded elementary schools.
- Fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) is strongly preferred.
- Completed coursework from a recognized college or university in deaf studies is preferred (including courses in audiology, speech and language, sign language interpretation, and/or transliteration).
- Experience working with students who are deaf/hard of hearing is preferred.
