Overview
The Edmund Optics (EO) Global Design Team is looking for an Optical Design Engineer II to join our team. In this role, you would be responsible for designing and analyzing optical designs to support our customers for a wide variety of applications and markets such as machine vision, medical diagnostics, and materials processing. The ideal candidate has a degree in Optics, or related field, as well as an understanding of optical design principles and software. A firm grasp of geometrical optics principals and aberration theory is expected, and prior experience with executing a design project is preferred.
The EO Design Team is diverse and highly collaborative with many opportunities for knowledge sharing and growth. This position provides the opportunity to gain valuable experience from a team of experienced optical and optomechanical designers.
Responsibilities
- Execute optical designs and analyses for internal product development and customer support
- Execute design reviews for peer projects independently
- Comply with and have a strong understanding of internal processes and procedures
- Occasionally participate in internal training, development, and mentorship of earlier career designers
- Occasionally promote company expertise externally via publications, volunteer roles, participation in webinars, or other external media/events

Required Skills & Abilities:
- Understanding of geometrical optics and optical design principles
- Understanding of and experience with optical design software (Zemax and/or Code V)
- Understanding of aberration theory
- Knowledge of optical fabrication processes
- Proficiency in communicating technical information
- Strong critical thinking skills
- Ability to receive and apply feedback appropriately
- Ability to strike an appropriate balance of independence and asking for support
- Good intra-personal communication skills
- Good time management skills
- US Citizenship or permanent residence required
Education/Experience:
Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Optical Sciences/Engineering, Physics, or other relevant field, and/or equivalent experience; 4 years’ experience in the optical industry
Physical Requirements:
Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time; ability to travel; work in office and manufacturing settings.
