EDU Healthcare is hiring a Orientation & Mobility Specialist for our school-based assignments in Accomack, VA

Orientation & Mobility Specialist

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree/ Master’s Degree (Preferred) in orientation and mobility, special education, rehabilitation counseling, or a related field
  • Active state-level licensure and/or certification - Certification as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) from the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP)
  • A valid teaching license or certification in physical education
  • Experience working in schools or with children is preferred but not required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct Mobility Assessments: Assess students’ current orientation and mobility skills, identifying strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Develop Individualized Plans: Create individualized orientation and mobility plans (IOMPs) based on assessment results, goals, and objectives.
  • Teach Orientation Skills: Provide instruction on spatial awareness, environmental awareness, and the use of landmarks to navigate various environments.
  • Teach Mobility Techniques: Instruct students in mobility techniques, including the use of a white cane, public transportation, and safe street-crossing practices.
  • Document Progress: Keep accurate records of assessments, progress, and any adaptations made to instructional strategies or mobility plans.
  • Report Outcomes: Prepare reports for stakeholders, including parents and school administrators, outlining progress and recommendations.
  • Engage in Ongoing Training: Participate in professional development opportunities to stay informed about the latest research, tools, and best practices in orientation and mobility.
  • Networking with Peers: Connect with other O&M specialists and professionals in the field to share knowledge and resources.
