Orientation & Mobility Specialist
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree/ Master’s Degree (Preferred) in orientation and mobility, special education, rehabilitation counseling, or a related field
- Active state-level licensure and/or certification - Certification as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) from the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP)
- A valid teaching license or certification in physical education
- Experience working in schools or with children is preferred but not required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct Mobility Assessments: Assess students’ current orientation and mobility skills, identifying strengths and areas for improvement.
- Develop Individualized Plans: Create individualized orientation and mobility plans (IOMPs) based on assessment results, goals, and objectives.
- Teach Orientation Skills: Provide instruction on spatial awareness, environmental awareness, and the use of landmarks to navigate various environments.
- Teach Mobility Techniques: Instruct students in mobility techniques, including the use of a white cane, public transportation, and safe street-crossing practices.
- Document Progress: Keep accurate records of assessments, progress, and any adaptations made to instructional strategies or mobility plans.
- Report Outcomes: Prepare reports for stakeholders, including parents and school administrators, outlining progress and recommendations.
- Engage in Ongoing Training: Participate in professional development opportunities to stay informed about the latest research, tools, and best practices in orientation and mobility.
- Networking with Peers: Connect with other O&M specialists and professionals in the field to share knowledge and resources.
