Purpose Statement

The job of Special Education Coordinator demonstrates a commitment to learning for all students by providing support

and professional development to Special Education providers on Individual Education Plan development- specially

designed instruction- and ensuring services for students with exceptionalities are delivered in accordance with the

Individuals with Disabilities Education and Improvement Act.

Essential Functions

  • Assist in coordination and implementations of staff development and orientation.
  • Monitor and implement program compliance with Federal and State rules and regulations.
  • Review IEPs to ensure IDEIA compliance.
  • Provide appropriate guidelines- consultation- and coordinative support to facilitate the IEP

process and procedures- as well as research-based instructional tools and practices- for staff

coop-wide.

  • Attend IEP meetings as necessary for ensuring consistency of student placement- observation of staff performance-

and general process oversight.

  • Develop and maintain a knowledge base of assessment- curriculum- and instruction- and their potential impact on

special education through continued professional development.

  • Provide instructional and IEP mentoring to certified staff.
  • Assist in the evaluation of special education programs and staff.
  • Assist with the completion of reports and file reviews to meet state compliance.
  • Maintain adequate records for completing required reports for all state and federal agencies.
  • Act as liaison between director/assistant director and the building teams regarding special education functions-

including participation in Advisory Board meetings and administrative meetings.

  • Keep informed of all legal requirements governing special education.
  • Develop and maintain strong professional relationships with regular education administrators and

teachers.

  • Assist with recruitment and assignment of paraprofessionals and certified staff.
  • Travel throughout the cooperative.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The employee performing the duties of this position is frequently required to walk- sit- talk- hear- bend- stoop- and

reach. The employee may be required to manually lift- move- or carry up to 50 pounds. The employee is required to interact

with staff and meet the demands of several different people. The employee is responsible for the work output of others.

Vision abilities required by this job include close vision- distance vision- depth perception- and the ability to adjust focus.

The employee occasionally works extended hours.

Skills- Knowledge And Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform single- technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing

job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: applying

assessment instruments; operating standard office equipment; performing standard bookkeeping; preparing and maintaining

accurate records; adhering to safety practices; and using pertinent software applications.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math- including calculations using fractions- percentages- and/or ratios; read

technical information- compose a variety of documents- and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems.

Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: behavioral

development concepts; age appropriate activities; safety practices and procedures; stages of child development; concepts of

grammar and punctuation; and business telephone etiquette.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities- meetings- and/or events; gather- collate- and/or classify data; and use job-related

equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but

different processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of

individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize specific- job-related equipment. Problem solving is

required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of

guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily

perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups;

maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines and schedules; working as part of a team; and working with detailed

information/data. Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods;

leading- guiding- and/or coordinating others; and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other

work units is often required to perform the job`s functions. There is some opportunity to impact the organization's services.

Responsibility

The usual and customary methods of performing the job`s functions require the following physical demands: occasional

lifting- carrying- pushing- and/or pulling; some stooping- kneeling- crouching- and/or crawling; and significant fine finger

dexterity. Generally the job requires 60% sitting- 15% walking- and 25% standing. The job is performed under conditions

with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
