The Mortgage Loan Originator is the forefront of delivering financial solutions to our members, guiding them through the mortgage loan process with care, expertise, and deep understanding of their needs. Using your knowledge of our credit union’s mission and products, you’ll serve as a trusted advisor, ensuring every interaction reflects our dedication to improving lives through financial empowerment.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Education/Certification
    • High School or equivalent
  • Required knowledge
    • Pursuing or possesses active Texas Mortgage MLO license
    • Highly proficient in organizational, project and time management skills
    • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience
    • Knowledge of Purchase and home equity products
    • Ability to navigate Encompass (preferred)
    • 5 years prior mortgage experience required
    • Bilingual (preferred)
  • Skills/Abilities
    • Must be proficient with all guidelines and websites necessary to complete job functions
    • Must demonstrate excellent personal and on the phone customer service.
    • Must demonstrate professionalism in dealing with members, managers, and co-workers
    • Ability to self-Motivate
    • Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities
    • Ability to understand or calculate income (including all self-employment)

Qualifications and Work Environment

  • Ability to read, write and comprehend instructions, correspondence, memos, and effectively present information to members, vendors, and employees of the organization.
  • Ability to perform basic math skills including the ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to use and understand current business software applications and able to troubleshoot and repair basic computer problems.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. 
  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
    • Frequently required to sit, talk, stand, walk, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. 
    • Ability to use hands and fingers, handle and feel objects, and reach with hands and arms.
    • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. 
    • Vision requirements include the ability to see close, far, see color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
    • Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. 

Key Responsibilities

General duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Member Guidance: Work closely with members to understand their homeownership goals, recommend tailored mortgage solutions, and guide them through the loan application process.
  • Loan Origination: Handle end-to-end loan origination, from initial member consultation to gathering required documentation and submitting complete applications.
  • Cross-Department Collaboration: partner with underwriting, processing, and other teams to ensure seamless communication and efficient processing for members.
  • Community Engagement: Represent the credit union in the community, building relationships and promoting our mortgage products and services.
  • Compliance & Accuracy: Ensure all loan applications comply with federal and state regulations, as well as internal policies, maintaining meticulous attention to detail.
  • Team Spirit: Contribute to our collaborative and supportive work environment by sharing ideas, best practices, and enthusiasm for our mission.
  • Continue Leaning: Stay informed about industry trends, regulatory changes, and new products to better serve our members.

Qualifications

General duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Maintains ongoing communications with Management, informing them of all pertinent problems, irregularities, new developments, changes, and other important information within area of responsibility.
  • Cooperates with other department personnel to ensure a "team effort" and prompt member service.
  • Promotes and maintains a positive image of the credit union to assigned personnel, members, and the community.
  • Follows safety and security rules and regulations.
  • Ensures that all information and transactions regarding credit union operations and members are kept confidential.
  • Maintains the security of the work area and keeps it organized and neat in appearance.
  • Maintains current knowledge of credit union philosophy, plus all credit union services and policies.
  • Cross-sells credit union products and services.
  • Participates in continuing education as approved by Senior Management.
  • Maintains a professional and courteous attitude with all people, including fellow employees, members, management staff, board members, and outside vendors.
  • Protects and respects credit union equipment and supplies.
  • Attends meetings as required.
  • Adheres to ECU Employee Personnel Policy and Guidelines Handbook.
  • Promotes and maintains a positive image of ECU to members and the community.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Senior Management.
  • Relationship Management: Proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships with members, real estate professionals, and community partners.
  • Sales Acumen: Demonstrated success in consultative sales or cross-selling financial products, with a focus on member satisfaction.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to assess unique member needs and identify creative, compliant solutions to meet those needs.
  • Time Management: Strong ability to manage multiple loan files simultaneously while meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Adaptability: Experience working in a dynamic environment with shifting priorities while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Financial Literacy: Solid understanding of financial statements, credit reports, and income documentation to assess borrower eligibility.
  • Community Involvement: Active participation in community events or networks that align with promoting homeownership and financial education.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Computer Skills: Ability to use and understand current business software applications including networking applications, word processing, spreadsheets, anti-virus, and various communications software applications. Ability to troubleshoot and repair basic computer problems such as connections, and cables.
