Education Week, an independent, nonprofit media organization that provides news, analysis, and research on K-12 American education, is seeking a full-time Digital News Reporter to join our Digital News team.
Job Summary
Education Week is looking for a passionate, innovative, and tenacious early-career journalist who is eager to strengthen their career in a newsroom and contribute to EdWeek’s mission. The ideal candidate will have strong news judgment and interpersonal skills, a curiosity to learn and able to take on a myriad of assignments and tasks in a variety of formats – text, visual, data immersive, newsletter writing, and more. This journalist enjoys new challenges and understands how to balance priorities in a professional setting. The Digital News Reporter reports to the Deputy Managing Editor, Digital News.
In addition to traditional news articles, this journalist will produce stories that may be formatted as videos, quizzes, explainers, visual pieces, features and profiles. They will bring a keen eye for exciting and engaging approaches to content delivery to help us draw new readers and subscribers, someone eager to balance smart reporting with eye-catching formats.

That's why we operate on a hybrid model, with the expectation that team members will be in the office during the current policy of assigned two days per week. This role is designed for those who thrive in a dynamic, collaborative environment and is not intended for remote or virtual work. This full-time, hybrid position is aligned to the Bethesda, MD office and candidate must be in the locality.
Responsibilities
- Consistently writes and produces a robust stream engaging content every month
- Builds relationships with sources in the education area
- Attends education events and press conferences
- Stays on top of education trends and regularly pitches related story ideas
- Conducts interviews with experts or key players in their industry
- Contributes to Digital New responsibilities and duties as assigned
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field
- 1-2 years of relevant media and/or education experience
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Comfort in covering a wide range of topics across the education space
- Ability to collaborate with peers and senior leadership on a variety of stories
- Strong technical skills, including understanding of a CMS and HTML
- Digital media skills such as audio, video and social media, a plus
- Ability to work under a deadline and write compelling, accurate pieces
- Ability to quickly adapt to changing circumstances and environments
- Working knowledge of education issues is extremely helpful, with a desire to learn
