Job Summary
The Managing Editor for Visuals and Immersive Experiences (ME, VEX) is a senior level newsroom leader who will help us develop and execute high-level strategies to grow our audience, deepen connections with new and loyal readers, and positively impact business results through innovative storytelling and purposeful visuals work. Reporting to EdWeek’s Editor-in-Chief, the ME, VEX, will lead the photography and videography, and arts and graphics, teams, and will work with newsroom and other company leaders to drive VEX coverage that conveys complex information in compelling ways. The ideal candidate thrives in a creative media environment, working closely with other newsroom and company leaders, and serves as an innovative, nimble leader with our advertising, marketing, sales, development, and research colleagues. They will work to support our mission—to help drive equitable educational opportunities and outcomes for all K-12 students—while embracing and executing the goals we set to sustain and grow the business. The ideal candidate will work closely with newsroom and company leaders to nurture our diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace environment, and to help ensure that our visuals content reflects those values.
This fulltime hybrid position is based in Education Week's Bethesda, MD, office in the Washington DC metro area. At EdWeek our people and relationships are at the heart of everything we do. We believe that in-person work is essential to our culture, collaboration and professional development. That's why we operate on a hybrid model, with the expectation that team members will be in the office during the current policy of the assigned two days per week. This role is designed for those who thrive in a dynamic, collaborative environment and is not intended for remote or virtual work. The position is aligned to the Bethesda, MD office and candidate must live in the locality.
Responsibilities
- Serve as one of the Editor-in-Chief's top strategic newsroom leaders.
- Serve as the editorial leader for visual strategy for Education Week and EdWeek Market Brief, working with editors, reporters, the EdWeek Research Center, and the VEX team to develop and produce exceptional visual journalism.
- Develop/maintain strong familiarity with national education news, issues, and trends.
- Own the organization’s reader-centric visuals strategy across content types and platforms, with the ability to incorporate monetization strategies.
- Lead design strategy and visual approaches for the organization’s suite of digital products and help us develop our product strategy and roadmap for key products in partnership with editorial, business and technology leaders.
- Partner with revenue, editorial, and technology colleagues to create innovative features and capabilities.
- Advance the organization’s data visualization work.
- Ensure visual consistency across platforms and products.
- Manage the VEX team—including the Deputy Managing Editor, Creative, and Director of Photography and Videography—budget, and operations.
Qualifications and Skills
- 7 years of experience producing “new school” digital visual journalism, and 4 years of people management experience.
- Strategic vision and experience for how design can further storytelling, drive brand recognition, and deliver business and audience development results.
- Strong collaborator, problem-solver, and negotiator, with experience leading and helping build strong partnerships across teams and demonstrated interest in the revenue goals of an organization.
- Can seamlessly balance focus on big picture strategy and tactical details.
- Excellent supervisory skills, including the ability to coach staff and prioritize their work when required, and demonstrated people management skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a fast-paced environment.
- High level of initiative, critical thinking, attention to detail, sound judgement, ethics, integrity, professionalism and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including traveling when needed, as required to meet the needs of the organization.
