PRIMARY PURPOSE

The Student Support Officer under the supervision of the Executive Director of Student and Family Support Services, ensures maximum attendance of Judson ISD students by working directly with student services, campus administrators, students, parents and guardians, and the community to investigate, resolve, and eliminate absences.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Certification Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License, a good driving record, and proof of insurance on vehicle used to travel to district
  • Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by the employee. 

Special Knowledge and Skills

  • Technology skills which include excellent command of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and ability to learn additional software programs.
  • Knowledge of laws, statutes, educational codes, compliance requirements, procedures, and practices related to student attendance.
  • Excellent presentation skills, interpersonal skills, organization skills, and time management skills
  • Dynamic team skills required in order to work collaboratively and productively with employees, students, parents and guardians, school board, the community, and other agencies 

Experience

  • Minimum of two (2) years of work experience in school or community programs mentoring and building relationships with school age children and young adults 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Promote positive interactions with students, schools, parents, guardians, and the community in order to promote school attendance and graduation.
  • Contact and communicates with parents, guardians, students, and the community to promote school attendance and decrease absences.
  • Foster a positive atmosphere on campus for students in Judson ISD.
  • Assist Truancy Officers and campus administration with the JISD Truancy Process.
  • Assist with truancy and dropout prevention by being visible on campus during passing periods and during lunch.
  • Support campus administration and staff in getting students to class prior to the tardy bell.
  • Support campus administration in monitoring students with frequent tardiness.
  • Assist with preventing students from leaving campus unauthorized.
  • Accompany Truancy Officers on home visits.
  • Support Truancy Officers in preparing and attending attendance forums.
  • Assist with student and parent conferences regarding attendance and truancy.
  • Maintain confidentiality of situations and information.
  • Responsible for recognizing and reporting hazards and applying to a safe work environment.
  • Build relationships with parents, guardians, students, and the community to promote school attendance and to learn reasons/causes of student’s absence, and work to circumvent future absences.
  • Maintain communication verbally, and through e-mails to provide assistance with the recovery of all dropouts, non-completers, and no-shows.
  • Maintain daily activity logs.
  • Participate in all community/campus “Attendance Initiative” programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, based on department needs 
  • Must complete designated district technology proficiencies each year
  • Requires a basic knowledge of technology/computer skills
  • Ability to use personal computer to access district programs, emails, and other resources
  • Maintain a consistent professional demeanor and appearance
  • Ensure compliance with the Texas Educator’s Code of Ethics
  • Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job

Equipment Used:

  • Office equipment – personal computer, printer, calculator, multi-line telephone, software programs and peripherals, copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to position
  • Communication equipment – radio communication equipment, cellular telephone

Mental Demands:

  • Ability to read, concentrate, communicate (verbally and written), interpret, reason, understand verbal instructions, memorize, coordinate, compile, compute
  • Work with frequent interruptions and maintain emotional control under stress

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent: Sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs and/or ramps, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive hand motions, hearing, speaking clearly, visual acuity, distinguishing colors, driving, traveling
  • Occasional: Lifting, moderate, 15-44 pounds

Environmental Factors:

  • Frequent exposure to temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination, vibration
  • Occasional exposure to biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.)
  • Work outside, work around moving objects or vehicles, work on uneven surfaces
  • Work alone, work prolonged or irregular hours

Grant-funded Position:

This position is being funded by the Office of the Governor, Public Safety Office, Criminal Justice Division, Juvenile Justice & Truancy Prevention Grant Program. The current grant award will end on September 30, 2025, with the potential for renewal in future years. This position is not guaranteed beyond September 30, 2025.
