Job Title : Skills Trainer Reports To : Program Manager

FLSA : Non-exempt Full-Time Position

Summary : Skills Trainer teaches students job tasks / soft skills within a community-based work environment following employer policies without direct supervision from supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities : May perform other duties assigned by the program manager. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Characteristics of various disabilities
  • Employability skills curriculum
  • Student specific learning goals
  • Community employer expectations
  • Programs and mandates for special education services
  • Creates a positive learning environment including :
  • Demonstrating a respect for individual differences.

  • Implementing appropriate behavior reinforcement techniques.
  • Modeling community employer and school district : policies, procedures, and corporate culture including but not limited to safety, professionalism, conflict resolution, dress code, voice volume, break etiquette, and ethics.
  • Providing supervision per direction of program teacher and / or Vocational Director.
  • Implementing fading protocol.
  • Completes daily tasks per teacher direction in order to prepare for teaching including but not limited to preparing data sheets, reviewing IEP / ETR and other pertinent documents, and gathering supplies.
  • Demonstrates ability to implement a variety of instructional techniques that accommodate various learning styles, disabilities, and student needs with groups of 1-5 students including but not limited to behavior management, CPI, evidence-based practices, prompting hierarchy, and job task accommodations and modifications.
  • Supports related services provided to the students, including incorporating use of technology for the purpose of communication.
  • Problem solves in order to help students meet or exceed community employer expectations.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the purpose of data collection as well as knowledge of various data collection techniques (i.e. checklist, time, prompting, etc.) by objectively collecting student employment data using a variety of tools (including but not limited to anecdotal records, task analyses, intervention plans, rating scales, and age-appropriate transition assessments) within given timeframes.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the purpose of data collection as well as knowledge of various data collection techniques (i.e. checklist, time, prompting, etc.) by objectively collecting student employment data using a variety of tools (including but not limited to anecdotal records, task analyses, intervention plans, rating scales, and age-appropriate transition assessments) within given timeframes.
  • Collaborates and communicates with students, program staff, parents, and community employers (written, spoken, and electronic) :
  • To support student learning, develop and correctly carry out work tasks, create a learning environment that is of high integrity.

  • Objectively, respectfully, and professionally including using person-first language and avoiding racist, sexual, or other inappropriate language.
  • Within the same work day when incidents occur in the school and / or community program settings
  • Understands the chain of command within both the community and school settings, including with regards to parent communication.
  • Maintains daily attendance and arrival / dismissal times consistent with assigned school district calendar and given contract requirements.
  • Ethically reports leave information.
  • Performs individual duties to allow for student safety including but not limited to administering medication (after participating in training), hygiene tasks, and caring for supplies.
  • Recognizes that student identifiable data should not be shared, including when using social media.
  • Demonstrates respect for boundaries by maintaining professional relationships with students (i.e. not being friends with students on Facebook, not transporting students in personal vehicle, not exchanging phone calls with students, etc.) per direction of program teacher.

    Environment : The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

    Physical Demands : The employee must regularly lift and / or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and / or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and / or move up to 50. Specific vision abilities required by this job include Close vision and Peripheral vision. While performing the duties of their job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk and sit; bend; twist; and squat. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

    Must be able to obtain a van certification without restrictions and be willing to drive students to worksites.

    Criminal Records Check : Must comply with Ohio Revised Code 3319.39 - Criminal Records Check.

    Drug Testing : Must pass a 10 panel drug screen at time of hire and comply with the Drug Free Workplace Act of 1988.
