General Responsibilities

Under the general direction of an Assistant Director of Special Education and the Executive Director of Specialized Services Birth to 21, the Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing provides assistance to administrators and teachers in developing programs and services to provide service for children with hearing impairments as well as provide direct instruction to those children.

Assignment:
This position is .51351 FTE (95 days per year) and will serve districts in the Columbia River Gorge, Dayton, and Ocean Beach.

Essential Functions/Other Functions

Essential Functions:
  1. Informs principals, teachers and other school personnel of hearing impaired services for the school year.
  2. Organizes and conducts an identification program for hearing disorders by utilizing appropriate screening criteria, materials, procedures and record-keeping strategies.
  3. Selects and employs appropriate diagnostic procedures and develops guidelines for a comprehensive remediation program.
  4. Selects and implements teaching strategies for modifying communicative behavior of each student with a hearing impairment.
  5. Consults with parents, special education and regular teachers, and other appropriate professionals regarding needs of the hearing impaired and techniques for insuring learning experiences.
  6. Maintains a system to record all identification and evaluative data and continuous student performance information.
  7. Completes all required reports and records in an accurate and timely manner.
Other Functions:
  1. Coordinates interpreter services.
  2. Assists in identifying and defining factors which determine the effectiveness of learning and redefines goals and modifies lesson strategies as needed.
  3. Performs at an independent level in interpersonal, technical and behavior management skills.
  4. Participates in screening of children for hearing deficiencies in conjunction with audiology and speech personnel.
  5. Tests hearing aids.
  6. Other duties as assigned.
 

Minimum/Preferred Qualifications & Skills

Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Hold or be eligible to hold a valid Washington teaching certificate with a special education or deaf education endorsement.
  2. Significant graduate coursework in area of hearing impairment.
  3. Proficiency in supporting listening and spoken language (LSL).
Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Master's degree in deaf education.
  2. Experience with programs and services for individuals with disabilities.
  3. Experience working with special education administrators.
  4. Experience developing individual curriculum for children with hearing impairments.
 

Working Conditions/Employment Requirements

Working Conditions:
  1. Classroom, preschool, and home settings.
  2. Provide assistance and attend to the physical needs of students including moving and positioning students and assisting with personal hygiene needs, including but not limited to: tube feeding, catheterization, changing diapers, toileting.
  3. Sit, stand stoop to attend to student's needs and to provide instruction. Strength and agility to assist physically impaired student.
  4. Daily travel.
Employment Requirements:
  1. Successful completion of a criminal history and fingerprint check through the WSP and FBI.
