  • This position is located at our Early Learning Center and is cooking for infants/toddlers *Full-time / 12 month position Head Start Cook Job Description Job Title: Cook Department: Head Start/Early Head Start Education Level and Certification: High School Diploma or equivalent. Reports To: Health & Nutrition Manager Required Job Tasks Requirements:
  • Two years experience in management of food preparation preferred.
  • Must possess ability to communicate effectively.
  • Basic computer skills using Microsoft Office and/or Google.
  • Training, meetings and community interactions may include some evenings, weekends or out of town travel.
  • Within 90 days of employment (or sooner if required by local/state regulations), must obtain and continually maintain basic first aid and pediatric/adult CPR certification.
  • A clear criminal records check (including child abuse registry check) is required prior to employment.
  • Complete a health screening prior to employment and annually thereafter.
  • Acceptable tuberculosis screening results prior to employment.
  • To drive agency vehicles (if applicable), must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by the ESU #13 insurance carrier and have a Motor Vehicle Record acceptable to ESU #
  • Essential Functions:
  • Prepare and serve multiple forms of attractive and tasteful food, adapted to the varied physical development of the children in the center, that are ages birth to 5 years that meets requirements for creditable meals.
  • With guidance of the Health/Nutrition Manager, modify menus and recipes and prepare foods to meet the developmental needs of infants and toddlers and the medical and feeding needs of children with disabilities or food allergies. A physician's statement must be obtained for special dietary needs.
  • Keep an organized and hygienic kitchen and surrounding area in order to uphold required health and safety standards.
  • Arrange efficient, timely and sanitary delivery of food to childcare rooms.
  • Assure that dishes for all rooms are sanitized and available to staff prior to mealtimes so that they may work with the children to prepare tables for meals.
  • Maintain food service equipment in working condition. Report damages and loss of kitchen equipment and food to Nutrition Coordinator.
  • Review menus for needed supplies and purchase, inventory, and properly store food. Purchase food needed for meals and snacks. Shop locally and order through food distributors, purchasing foods in an economical manner.
  • Assure delivered food items are stored properly.
  • Maintain complete and accurate required CACFP paperwork. Paperwork includes menu production records, monthly adjustment sheets, food transport records, inventories, cycle menus, meal count worksheets, refrigerator and freezer logs, and food purchase receipts. Compile monthly reports accurately. Turn in all monthly CACFP documentation on time.
  • Post and maintain all required CACFP public notices.
  • Be a resource to teachers for food experience ideas with children and ways children can be involved in food preparation. Purchase food experience foods.
  • Communicate in a positive and proficient manner.
  • Maintain confidentiality of program, children, families and staff.
  • Involve parents in better understanding of nutrition and increase abilities in food preparation and serving, along with providing consumer information.
  • Supervises staff and volunteers working in the kitchen.
  • Participate and contribute to support a quality program through participation in team meetings, training, professional development and program assessment.
  • Maintain standards of confidentiality regarding program, children, families and staff.
  • Model positive regard for program in the community.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Head Start Management Team and the Director.
  • Comply with the Standards for ESU #13 Employee Performance and Code of Ethics. At-Will Position. This position is an "at-will" position and may be terminated, with or without cause, at any time in the sole discretion of the ESU 13 Administrator or ESU 13 Administrator's designee. Essential Functions: The essential functions of the Cook position include: (1) regular, dependable in-person attendance on the job; (2) the ability to perform the identified tasks and to possess and utilize the identified knowledge, skills, and abilities and to perform the identified work activities; and (3) the ability to perform the following identified physical requirements.
