What are the responsibilities and job description for the Heavy Equipment Operator position at Edwards Design & Construction, Inc.?
Position Summary:
We are seeking a qualified Heavy Equipment Operator to run equipment such as, but not limited to; excavators, dozers, backhoes, and loaders for commercial excavation and utility installation projects. The ideal candidate will have experience working around underground utilities and a solid understanding of grades, trenching, and job site safety.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate heavy equipment (excavators, loaders, skid steers, dozers, trenchers, etc.) for tasks such as digging trenches, site grading, and backfilling
- Safely excavate around existing utilities (water, sewer, storm, gas, electric, etc.)
- Understand and follow trench safety and OSHA excavation standards
- Read and interpret site plans, utility drawings, and grade stakes
- Assist in installing underground utilities when needed (water, sewer, storm drain)
- Conduct daily equipment inspections and basic maintenance
- Work closely with pipe layers, laborers, and foremen to complete tasks efficiently
- Ensure job site safety and compliance with all company and regulatory requirements
- Report any equipment malfunctions or unsafe conditions immediately
Qualifications:
- 2 years of experience operating heavy equipment on excavation and utility projects
- Strong working knowledge of trenching, grading, and working around underground utilities
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and site layouts is a plus
- Familiarity with GPS or laser-guided equipment is a bonus
- Must have a valid driver’s license; CDL is preferred
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform physical labor as needed
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification preferred
- Strong communication skills and ability to work well in a team
