What are the responsibilities and job description for the LUMBER GRADER position at EDWARDS WOOD PRODUCTS?
Day Shift: 6am - 6pm
Summary: Evaluate log characteristics and determine grades following NHLA and SPIB rules and customer specifications. Identify logs of substandard or special grade so that they can be returned to shippers, regraded, recut or transferred for other processing. Jab logs with metal ends of scale sticks, and inspect logs to ascertain characteristics or defects such as water damage, splits, knots, broken ends. Rotten areas, twists, and curves. Measure logs to calculate volume, weight, dimensions, and marketable value, using measuring devices and conversion tables. Record data into hand held collection terminals. Communicate with coworkers by using signals, radio communication to direct log movement. Separate log species for further moving of logs to designated area. Measure log lengths and mark for bucking into logs, according to specifications. As directed, paint identification marks of specified colors on log to identify grades or species, using spray cans or log markers. Maintain constant observation of safety by observing surroundings. Operating log loading equipment such as Knuckle Boom, and Front-End loaders. Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications:
- Excellent attendance.

- Follow prescribed procedures; grade/inspect a variety of hardwood lumber.
- Maintain a steady flow of lumber.
- Coordinate and direct the stacking of lumber by grade, length, species following established procedures to trim saw and sorter.
- Some Mechanical Skills
- Great Math Skills (adding fractions is a must)
- Constant standing, bending, reaching, without weight bearing load.
- Must have good vision. Demanding to perform this job.
- Follow and maintain EWPI safety rules and regulations.
- Keep the work area clean and in an orderly fashion.

Pay: $17.00 - $20.00 per hour
