PRIMARY PURPOSE : Ethically and scientifically provides materials analysis and investigatory analysis and consultation through the Milwaukee Materials and Engineering Laboratory. Provides guidance and leadership on complex materials / engineering assignments and contributes to overall profitability of the company through providing expert / engineering consulting services.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS and RESPONSIBILITIES
- Designs and implements laboratory maintenance, calibration, and quality programs; prepares and maintains the lab for artifact inspections, and partners in the operation performed during multi-party artifact inspections.
- Analyzes and performs non-destructive inspections of artifacts in the lab to document and gather information on the failure analysis and causation of failures; operates machinery to section large parts, extracts samples from areas of interest for further material examination and prepares mounted and polished cross sections.
- Serves as a materials analysis subject matter expert; researches product information, codes, and standards and provides guidance as appropriate.
- Conducts a variety of tests including hardness measurement and photographic / microscopic documentation; tracks and catalogs testing results, images, and data.
- Partners with forensic engineers to produce detailed reports outlining the origin and cause of losses and damages, including measurements, and diagrams of systems and components; assists forensic engineers during field inspections and transport artifacts to / from other labs for testing.
- Interfaces with internal and external stakeholders to help set up projects and coordinate testing activities; develops and constructs instrumented test setups, as needed.
- Provides guidance and leadership to newer colleagues and / or those with less experience on complex assignments.
- Inspects losses and loss scenes at residential, commercial, and industrial buildings in the laboratory and / or in the field, as needed.
- Investigates and assesses damages and evidence due to failures and determines the origin of failure for insurers and litigation support.
- Serves as an expert witness in court and / or depositions.
- Documents and maintains billable hours on a time and expense basis for failure analysis and forensic engineering projects for clients.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Licensing
Experience
Eight (8) years of related experience, to include six (6) years of material analysis / failure analysis, or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Experience giving expert witness testimony preferred.
