Job Summary :

This position is responsible for collecting survey data using designated survey equipment. Plans, organizes and directs surveying work to determine precise location and measurement of point of elevation, land area and contours for construction map making, land and other purposes.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities :

  • The Instrument Technician sets up, adjusts, and operates surveying equipment, including electronic total station, data collector, and GPS equipment, in order to measure distances, elevations, and angles.
  • Prepares field notes and drawings; and performs field surveying for roadway, bridges, and flood control projects, including topographic surveying, installing setting surveying construction stakes, and locating or establishing vertical and horizontal control, right of way, monuments, corners, boundaries, and property lines.
  • Provides work control lines and elevations that are required for accurate measurement and correct installation of materials.
  • Provide checking of as-built conditions that require the use of surveying techniques.
  • Provide topographic and cross-section surveys as required for planning and payment quantities.
  • Provide quantity calculations as required.
  • Prepares documentation of surveying activities.
  • Maintain condition and adjustment of surveying equipment Coordinate surveying activities to meet construction requirements.
  • Must have knowledge of and ability to use all surveying equipment and techniques.
  • Moves materials and equipment to work locations and sets up work sites.
  • Follows all hazardous waste handling guidelines.
  • Responsible for observing and complying with all safety and project rules.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Under direction of Party Chief, obtains data pertaining to angles, elevations, points, and contours used for construction, using a level, transit, and other surveying instruments.
  • Directs Rod / Chain Person and other subordinate members of survey team in safe manner.
  • May fill in for absent Party Chief.
  • Responsible for observing and complying with all safety and project rules. Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge, skills and abilities :

  • Work within precise limits or standards of accuracy. Plan work and select proper tools. Compare and see differences in the size, shape and form of lines, figures and objects.
  • Visualize objects in three dimensions from plans and drawings. Make decisions based on measurable criteria. Work at heights without fear.
  • Ability to effectively verbally communicate directions from craft supervisors, and respond to questions from managers and fellow workers.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
  • Be able to read and comprehend simple measurements.
  • Intermediate math skills which include trigonometry and geometry.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with others.
  • Ability to effectively verbally communicate directions from craft supervisors, and respond to questions from managers and fellow workers.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
  • Work Environment :

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee primarily works in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt and may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration.
  • The employee is exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.
  • Potential for extended travel to remote job sites working extended workdays.
  • Education, certification and experience :

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years' experience in surveying.
  • Valid Driver's License is required.
  • Physical Requirements :

  • The employee is frequently required move about the office and construction sites.
  • The employee is occasionally required to position his or herself to utilize construction equipment and identify and avoid hazards.
  • The employee might frequently lift and move up to 10 pounds and occasionally might lift and move up to 25 pounds.
  • The employee may be subject to working in confined spaces, such as manholes, wet wells, valve vaults, and mechanical / electrical rooms or around storage tanks, etc.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
