Purpose of the Position
The Petroleum Construction Project Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates for underground and aboveground storage tank construction and installation projects. This role requires a strong understanding of construction practices, materials, and regulatory requirements related to petroleum storage systems. The estimator ensures project feasibility by evaluating costs, collaborating with stakeholders, and maintaining industry compliance.
Essential Position Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for storage tank construction and installation projects.
- Analyze project specifications, drawings, and other documents to determine scope, materials, labor, and equipment requirements.
- Research and evaluate pricing for materials, subcontractors, and vendors to ensure competitive and realistic estimates.
- Develop and maintain unit cost databases for construction-related items.
- Work closely with project managers, engineers, and clients to define project scope and address cost-related concerns.
- Assist in the preparation of project proposals, bids, and budgets based on client requirements and company standards.
- Provide clear and concise documentation and presentations to support project proposals and budget reviews.
- Ensure all estimates comply with relevant federal, state, and local regulations for petroleum storage systems.
- Stay informed about industry standards, best practices, and changes in compliance requirements.
- Identify opportunities to improve estimating processes, tools, and methodologies.
- Stay updated on market trends, including material costs and labor rates, to refine accuracy.
Physical activities: Typing on a keyboard; reading and verifying data, often in small print; sitting for up to 8 hours per day; talking on phone; may require visits to job sites resulting in exposure to hazards typical of a construction site
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Occasional utilization of steel-toed boots, gloves, safety vests, hard hat at site visits.

Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
Preferred Skill Set: Minimum of 3 years of experience in construction estimating, with specific experience in petroleum or storage tank construction highly preferred. Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and industry practices related to storage tank installation. Proficiency in construction estimation software and tools. Excellent analytical and organizational skills, with a keen eye for detail. Ability to interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical documents. Strong communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. Familiarity with regulatory requirements for underground and aboveground storage tanks.
