EKI Environment & Water, Inc. (EKI) is a national employee-owned, full service environmental engineering, water resources engineering, and environmental sciences consulting firm, serving private- and public-sector clients.

We are currently seeking a Health and Safety Manager to lead and oversee the implementation and management of EKI’s corporate health and safety program across all operating states. This role will report directly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and will be responsible for ensuring that all health and safety regulations are followed to maintain a safe and compliant working environment for company employees and subcontractors.

The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of federal, state, and local regulations and be able to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams to foster a culture of safety throughout the organization.

Responsibilities

Program Management

  • Implement and manage the corporate health and safety program across all operating states, ensuring consistency, continuity, and compliance company wide.
  • Implement and manage all ancillary programs and policies associated with health and safety, including company vehicle operation, hazard communication, small equipment use and maintenance, subcontractor vetting, etc.
  • Develop and maintain all necessary standard operating procedures (SOPs) associated with corporate health and safety and ancillary programs.
  • Regularly review and update health and safety policies and procedures to align with industry best practices and local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Prepare reports and provide updates to the COO on safety performance, trends, and improvement initiatives.
  • Develop and manage the health and safety department budget, ensuring resources are allocated appropriately.

Exposure Monitoring and Medical Surveillance

  • Conduct and maintain employee exposure monitoring program for chemical, physical, and biological hazards.
  • Manage medical surveillance program, including pre- and post-employment and annual exams.
  • Manage respirator fit testing program, including annual fit testing, respiratory inspection and maintenance, and proper use.

Compliance and Recordkeeping

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and all other relevant local, state, and federal health and safety regulations.
  • Prepare and submit all required health and safety documentation, such as OSHA 300 logs, workers compensation claims, and safety audit and inspection records; collaborate with Human Resources Director as appropriate.
  • Manage employees return to work program.
  • Maintain detailed records of employee training, safety incidents, inspections/audits, corrective actions, medical monitoring, employee exposure monitoring, fit testing, and other employee and/or compliance programs.
  • Manage safety records and ensure compliance with third-party client safety audit platforms (e.g., Avetta).

Training and Education

  • Design and maintain a robust health and safety training program specific to employee job position and duties, operating state, and client/project requirements.
  • Maintain a comprehensive and dynamic training program to quickly adapt to new employees and project demands.
  • Perform requisite in-house safety training courses for company employees, including OSHA 8-hour HAZWOPER refresher, first aid/CPR, and specific-hazard awareness.
  • Develop processes and programs to build a strong safety culture within the company, promoting a safety-first and behavior-based program.
  • Engage employees to actively participate in the company’s safety culture and program.

Incident Investigation and Reporting

  • Build and maintain a robust incident management system (IMS), including communication and reporting procedures and coordination with local urgent cares and the third-party on-call incident intervention contractor (e.g., WorkCare).
  • Lead investigations into workplace accidents, injuries, and near misses, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions.

Hazard Assessment, Prevention, and Control

  • Conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments across all company offices and projects to identify OSHA hazards.
  • Identify and maintain appropriate engineering, administration, and personal protective equipment (PPE) controls for hazard mitigation.
  • Develop and maintain hazard control plans and site-specific health and safety plans (HASPs).
  • Identify needs for safety equipment, policies, and controls necessary to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Work with technical staff to address project-specific health and safety issues.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Work closely with the COO and senior leadership team to integrate health and safety practices into organizational strategies and daily operations.
  • Foster a culture of safety by actively engaging with employees, providing guidance, and encouraging proactive safety behaviors.
  • Create a streamlined feedback system to enable timely collection and distribution of critical safety data including near misses, observations, incidents, corrective actions, and controls.

Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate should have the following qualifications:

  • Minimum of 8 years of health and safety management, with a proven track record of managing safety programs across multiple operating areas and states.
  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, environmental health, or a related field.
  • Certification in Health and Safety Management (e.g., Certified Safety Professional [CSP]).
  • OSHA HAZWOPER and first aid/CPR trainer certifications are strongly preferred.
  • Experience in environmental and construction services is preferred.
  • Deep understanding of OSHA regulations, safety standards, and health and environmental laws.
  • Strong analytical skills to assess risks, identify hazards, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with an ability to present complex safety issues.
  • Ability to both collaborate and work independently, managing multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Strong sense of personal accountability, integrity, and timely follow-through.
  • Strong and energetic leadership skills with the ability to engage and motivate teams to prioritize health and safety.
  • Ability to have a strong, candid relationship with the COO.
